4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 Nickls (1344) - SE DC, Washington DC, USA - MAY 29, 2012
Release #3, bottle. Jet black with a dark tan head. Lots of dark chocolate, roast, and coffee in the aroma with slight dark fruit sweetness. Flavor is caky with coffee and dark bitter chocolate and the barrel aging doesn’t come in all that strong. I had the #5 release two weeks ago and it was moreish all-around with more woodiness and whisky notes along with the huge coffee and chocolate presence. Medium body and warming. Nice
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 stumpyiliz (16) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 26, 2012
I have been sitting on the first release bottle since I got it last year. I’ve had release number 2 and 3, but only have had Number one once before. Revisiting this since my first time around.
Cappuccino smell and slow lingering head. Initial taste smooth, thick, sweet followed by the classic Heavily coffee’d bourbon and bitter cocoa nibs flavor attributed to this style of Barrel aging. Long finish on the sides of the tongue. Definitely worth seeking out. I would predict that the coffee would die down on the finish and the bourbon/vanilla would become more prevalent..
Super
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Damico (1403) - Royersford, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 25, 2012
Pours unclear dark unclear dark brown/black coffee in color with a light beige head. The aroma is the shining star, absolutely outstanding. Just like Breaky Stout, it has the dark cocoa brownie notes blended well with the coffee so fresh in the nose. The flavor brings sweet, light roasted malts and sweet coffee notes with a bit of cacao and bitterness on the end.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 FROTHINGSLOSH (3388) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 6, 2012
From the 5/2012 3R6P tasting. +++ Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured thick, black and oily with a small dark tan head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was strong espresso, light vanilla and cream. The flavor was strong coffee, cocoa, coconut, port wine, vanilla, wood, roasty malts and tobacco. Very rich though a bit dry for my taste. The finish was long dry, and roasty with lingering wood, smoke, coconut and tobacco. Thick and creamy body. Very well done.

Sampled on dld eve. Black and cool looking. A light smoky nose but it is big in the flavor. So much coffee in both. Chocolate, too, and some nice hops in the background. This is good. Mbb bbn
2.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20 JDBaker11058 (680) - Maryland, USA - APR 26, 2012
Appearance: near black, with a short, purplish head that shrank to a fat collar; syrupy legs and minimal, bubbly lace. Aroma: wood, booze, chocolate powder, musty dark bread, watery coffee. Taste: chocolate, coffee, wood, and booze booze booze. Finish: boozy, almost medicinal, with bitter licorice and ash. Notes: Needless to say, I didn’t care for this at all. It didn’t even try for nuance, just hit me in the face with a shovel full of bourbon, like they poured three shots in every bomber instead of aging it in barrels. Would have benefited from about 5 years in the cellar, I think. Batch #3.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 jcnielsen (42) - Kansas City, Missouri, USA - APR 25, 2012
Bottled. Thanks to adnielsen for the bottle. Strong aroma of coffee and hints of cocoa and bourbon. Very coffee forward taste, but even so, it is fairly balanced with the bourbon and cocoa flavors. One of my favorite coffee-imperial stouts.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 hopdog (7051) - Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 22, 2012
22oz bottle. Release #2. Poured a dark black with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of wood, ash, roast, coffee, smoke, chocolate, and earth. Tastes of coffee, vanilla, caramel, chocolate, some dark fruits, and light bourbon. Alcohol hidden.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 JCB (3105) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - APR 22, 2012
Bomber from Sam’s, Durham. This one was outrageous, over the top and face-wrecking and I like it! I wasn’t necessarily that interested in a RIS when I picked this up but this one scrambled my head in a pretty great way. Big motor oil pour, well carbonated, and a look that was at times almost chalky. Nose was huge, not merely overpowering but almost elegant in how it held together so many different assertive elements without being a trainwreck. Nice mouthfeel, a bit hot but not too much. Flavors were also ridiculously good, with an initial blast of coffee and chocolate, followed by a deep mellow bourbon note. Underlying stout character is impressive too, and I was greatly impressed with the whole.
