All of us here at Epic are happy to introduce the newest exponential libation—Blue Law Porter. This is a medium-bodied porter to which we added blackberry puree at the end of primary fermentation and finished it with spruce tip extract harvested from Blue Spruce trees found on the grounds of Utah’s State Capitol building. It has a roasting profile with a fruity tartness and an aftertaste of resinous spruce.

On tap @ Malibu Sundowner. Dark brown, just about black, with a khaki head. Interesting nose. Definitely get some berries which add a light tartness. Herbal pine and spruce, roasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate. Mild caramel sweetness. Flavor is roast, berries, and herbs. Decent amount of roasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate. A hint of ash, light sweetness, and a dry finish. Interesting, but not bad.

Bomber, release #1. Poured cola brown with a short, reddish-tinted beige head. The aroma picked up sweeter blackberries, vanilla, and cocoa with light herbal accents.. lots more blackberry jam on the back of the nose.. not totally my thing, but it was aiight. The flavor found similar stuff.. cocoa, vanilla, and blackberry meat at the core, with light earthy and herbal bitterness around.. picked up a little tart blackberry seed over cocoa and vanilla on the moderately-roasty finish. Light-medium bodied and dry on the palate.. a bit tangy from the berries and the spruce.. this was OK, but I probably would’ve preferred straight-up porter.

Bottle (Batch 2) and served in snifter: Pours a muddled deep brown with a light tan ring of foam and good lace. The aroma has a moderate fruitiness but could not tell it was Blackberries. Some piney and herbal esters. Very light nutty notes as well. The taste is twangy but really not much else until you get to the resiny and soapy finish from the Spruce. This really needs to have more richer Porter notes IMO. Overall:

E for effort, nice idea, willingness to try new combinations. Okay Blackberry undertones.

F for execution, Spruce brings a herbal soapy character to the edges and finish... not enough true roasty and nutty Porter notes.

Bottle from Appalachian Vintner. Release 1. Some roasted malt notes on the nose. The blueberry on the tongue is faint by now but even what’s left fails to blend with the roasted notes very convincingly. Not getting much spruce by now. Not my favorite from these guys.

AZ Strong Beer Festival. Smokey aroma. Sweet cherry-like, followed by a darker roast. Light body. Decent.

$7.79 Bottle. Wine Warehouse. Charlottesville. Pours dark brown with two inches of foamy tan head. Smells of coffee, blackberry, and caramel. Tastes of toffee, caramel. Finishes with a tangy blackberry.

Dark root beer colored beer with a beige foamy head that is more fizzy than creamy, although it sets up in thick peaks. Nose is fruity with berries, light chocolate, and sweet malt. Sharp, but pleasant berry flavor up front, which is then balanced a bit by some lightly roasted malt and faint bitterness. Some flavor of mocha, but not nearly as rich as most good porters. The flavor profile is dominated by the fruit. Good beer, but could be better.

22 ounce bottle into signature pint glass; Release 2, bottled 12/6/2012. Pours crystal clear deep reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of milk chocolate, blackberry, roasted malt, toast, caramel, floral, coffee, light spruce, and roasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of roasted malt notes with blackberry and light spruce tip additions; with solid strength. Taste of milk chocolate, roasted malt, blackberry, toast, caramel, floral, pine, light coffee, and toasted earthiness. Slight pine bitterness and light fruit tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, blackberry, roasted malt, toast, caramel, floral, pine, light coffee, and toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance and complexity of roasted malt and fruit flavors; with a very nice malt/fruit balance with light-moderate spruce presence; and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a creamy and slightly syrupy mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a nice fruited porter. Good balance of roasted malt and fruit flavors; and very smooth to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.
