2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Bloody orange. Short-lived light tan head. Notes of plastic, medicine and red licorice strongly permeate the nose amid hints of fruity esters (pineapple, peach fuzz, plum jam), bready malt and shades of orange marmalade. Firm carbonation. Sweetly malty yet wonderfully light in weight, initially. An ensuing plasticlike and medicinal astringency combine with the red licorice to tarnish things with considerable dullness. Alcohol flirts at a fusel sharpness, as well. Sweet and succulent center is sustained by notes of peach and pineapple upside-down cake, though the plastic never wanes. Cleanly extracted malt offers a glimpse of redemption as it leaves behind a plenitude of finely textured bready dextrins which softly caress the palate. Hops exude with sufficient strength to balance the grain with an elegantly spicy bitterness and a juicy dollop of grapefruit pith. Balanced finish of vivid malt and citrus is marred by plastic and medicine/cough syrup. I really admire the approach here, as it clocks in at under 5%. Certainly some promise here, as the malt is clean and the hops juicily flavorsome and perfectly bitter. But in the end, the plastic and medicine make this undrinkable for me. Shucks.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20

Smell: Spiced, caramel enveloped toasted malt with teensy fruit notes.
Taste: Moderately toasty malts with a fair degree of caramel sweetness. Low fruitiness of apricot, perhaps a bit of apple. Light spice accent. Hint of citrus. Subtly bitter. Drying, soft finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Overall: A clean, refreshing, welcome amber ale with a likable ABV.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white, mostly lasting.
Body is hazy dark amber, bottle conditioned.
Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (caramel, cookie), lightly to moderately hoppy (apricot, flowers, grapefruit), with light notes of mango and black tea, hint of ginger.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter.
Medium body, velvety/creamy texture, lively carbonation.
Well, I’ll be damned. This is quite a solid bitter (pale ale, amber ale, whatever Americans want to call it, it’s an English bitter). Pleasant and enticing balance of cookie-caramel malt and fruity hops and esters, can’t go wrong with that. Clean and balanced in the mouth, velvety-creamy mouthfeel, lasting head, bottle conditioned. Reminds me a bit of Santa Fe Pale Ale. A lot better than I was expecting based on their Elevated/Exponential specialty series, which so far have still failed to impress...kept passing this up in the store ’cause who cares about another fricking amber ale, right? Well, I’d buy this again for sure...4.8% and not priced at the stupid levels of most breweries these days ($4.50/bomber). Good on ya for this one, Epic.

Aroma: nice mild fruity hop bouquet, sweet malts, slight dustiness
Appearance: amber, tan head that will not go down
Taste: great malt profile, hops that add a fruity character, nutty
Palate: medium bodied, easy drinking
Overall: I was very surprised that I enjoyed this amber this much. I won’t be afraid to order another one when it is available.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
22oz bottle from the brewery - had this a couple of times but haven’t gotten around to rating it. Pours a hazy copper color with medium sized light tan head. Aroma is bready and toasty, with light caramel and dry toast, a faint hint of orange peel. Flavor has a firm malty backbone, with medium caramel, toasty notes, and a bit of dry oak. Finish is balanced. This is alright but nothing amazing.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 9/26/11
Aroma: Has kind of faint nose, what is there is sweet, caramel, and fruity notes (maybe a little apple?)
Appearance: This one pours a cloudy dark orange color with small beige head and light lace on the glass
Flavor: The taste is fairly sweet, it is similar to the nose, mostly caramel/ toffee malts, and just a touch tart
Palate: The body is light-medium, with a decent feel, tingly carbonation, and a lasting, slightly dry finish
This is an alright Amber beer. It was drinkable enough, but it wasn’t particularly exciting. Decent stuff, I don’t have a ton more to add beyond that...
