3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 DavoleBomb (1143) - Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 26, 2012
Poured into a snifter. Release #2, 8.5% ABV.
4.0 A: Dark brown black color. Two and a half fingers of frothy tan head. Retention is decent and a moderate amount of lacing is left.
3.5 S: Dry roastiness along with a good bit of toastiness as well. Smells kinda like an imperial schwarzbier. Caramel and molasses.
3.5 T: Follows the nose for the most part. Roasty, toasy, caramel, and molasses. Light neutral malt sweetness. Alcohol is well hidden.
4.5 M: Medium to heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Nice creaminess in this. Very nice.
3.5 D: Not the most exciting offering, but more than solid. Epic is making a statement with me.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Beaver (913) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - MAY 11, 2012
22oz bottle, release #1. Pours light brown with a smallish frothy off white head that quickly goes to a thin film that leaves a little lacing.
The aroma is grainy chocolate and toasted caramel malts with some acidic hops.
The flavor is sweet grainy chocolate and toffee malts with a little dark fruit and some hops that lead to a dry finish with some alcohol. As it warms, some leathery notes come out. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation.
Overall, a kind of strange doppelbock. OK.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 matthewjk (550) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAR 17, 2012
Poured from 22oz bomber - This came damn near to being "epic." The look, the aroma, the smoothness! Doppelbock is certainly not one of my favorite styles, but this one is so well produced I have to give it recognition. It’s a chocolate bock--I swear. Extremely malty, bread, yeast, maple, and chocolate. Really good showing from Epic, but that is nothing unusual.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 talon1117 (1066) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - FEB 4, 2012
The pour is a deep mahogany color with ruby highlights and a fairly small, beige, pillowy head which is mostly diminishing and leaves minimal lace. The nose is fairly simple for a doppel; very bready, rich caramels, toasty, some raisin, and a slight bit if earth. The flavor is similar with more richness noted; raisins, rich caramel, faint roast, some toast, and an a slight herbal note. The palate is lively, syrupy, lightly crisp, and medium. The finish is a bit more bitter and herbal, still rich caramel, and toasty. Does carry the richness and typical features of a doppel, but lacks depth and complexity. The palate does seem to get in the way of the beer as well. Decent but not great.
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 adnielsen (3755) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - JAN 18, 2012
Bottle @ home. Pours a fairly cloudy, dark brown appearance with a small, bubbly, cream-colored head. The nose reminds me of almost a nut brown with a toasty caramel malty, nutty, espresso, toffee smell. A touch roasty, a bit burnt, caramel malty, somewhat bitter, weird toffee flavor. This really doesn’t remind me of a doppelbock. Not all that bad but not that great either.
