As dark as sin with a lively caramel head that left excellent lace behind in the glass. I’m intrigued to find resinous Pacific NW hop aroma rather than bold caramel and chocolate. The more I think of it, the more I like that the status quo is being pushed, but we’ll see if this translate to a rating typical of those preceding this one. Flavours initially of darker malts, burnt grain and sprucy hops. Does it go well together? I don’t think it doesn’t. It doesn’t adopt the Epic philosophy of grasping your tastebuds and giving your head a bloody good rattle but I think the combination works rather well. There’s balance and subtlety (and I hope this doesn’t make Luke Nicholas’ head explode for my writing it). I’m getting ripe apricots, spruce and bitterness along with dark chocolate and cocoa and it isn’t unwelcome on my palate. The flavour is lasting and brings out the sprucy hops toward the finish. I would ask why this hasn’t been done in greater measure before or are we all a little bit precious about what stout should be? This stout is silky and not shy on flavour, so what is the problem?

Pours black as tar with a frothy and foamy one inch dark brown head. Looks pretty damn tasty. The nose is rich and roasty with some burnt malt, espresso, bakers chocolate, and a light, almost citrusy, hoppiness. The flavor is very roasty as well, but there’s also an underlying base of sweet dark caramel too. Some burnt malt, licorice, and dark roasted coffee notes also. Finishes with a little citrusy hops and a light hint of alcohol. Rather full bodied and chewy for being sub-8% with soft gentle carbonation. Slightly sticky mouth coating finish. Pretty good stuff.

Bottle @ The Lets do a Chris O tasting. Wonderful smoky soy-sauce nose, unfortunately for me that was as good as it got, some chocolate and licorice on the tongue but the taste was nowhere near as good as the smell.
