COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Epic Brewing Company’s latest barrel-aged beer brings something new—wild yeast. This brew is a collaboration ale with Crooked Stave Artisan Brewing of Fort Collins, Colorado. Chad Yakobson, Brewmaster/Owner of Crooked Stave, is well known for his skill and knowledge in the brewing of sour and Brettanomyces driven beers. The beer was brewed at Epic by the two brewers. Kevin Crompton, Epic’s Brewmaster, and Chad spent several weeks working on the recipe and selecting the proper Brett strains and barrels for the beer to morph from a golden Saison into a Saison-Brett Golden Ale.

On tap at Falling Rock. Aroma of brett, earthy hops, funky yeast, tart fruit and light malts. Similar flavor, crisp and lightly tart. OK.

$11.99 at Olive Tree Market in OB many months ago, release #2. Uh-oh--poured slowly with no head, vigorously the last half of the pour with only a few big bubbles... For a brett-spiked beer? These are usually overcarbonated...pineapple brett and green apple in the nose, some leather funk. Flavor follows with the apple, but then I got a good amount of berry white wine and oak, lightly buttery--perhaps a chardonnay barrel? I suck at wine. Also a touch of leather. Touch of warming alcohol. Earthy dry finish, tartness peaked at a 3ish. only the slightest hint of carbonation pretty well flat, with a thinner body than I like. The carbonation and body kill this beer for me. Definitely better as it warmed to room temp--otherwise it’d be a 3.3

Bottle to glass. Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a thin off-white head. Aroma is dry, with acetic acid, brett, sour apple. Flavor is quite tart, also a bit dry, with hints of apple. Light in body with a lingering sour long into the finish. Not bad. Love the label.

On draught at Saraveza for the 2014 Portland Farmhouse and Wild Ale Festival. Clear light golden color. Aroma is funky basement and light grape. Taste is balanced funk, white wine, berries. Fairly light-bodied sour, which is nice.

The ale really varies from release to release. Currently, drinking release #4 (about a 3.5) which is funky, fermented tropical fruit, and slightly astringent on the palate. Release #6 is far better I’d say easily over a 4.0 rating. The #6 is much more tart and more along the lines of a sour (a less aggressive petrus). Great aroma a little spicy with a very tart sour fruit taste and finish. I’m not sure about the other releases, but I’d recommend finding the #6.

I’ve never had a more brett forward ale! The aroma and taste stinks, just like us brett lovers expect. Make this in 16 oz. cans, year around, and it would never leave my frig!

4/III/14 - 1Pt. 6Fl. Oz. bottle @ home - release#4, SLC#1367 whatever that may mean (2014-243) Thanks to ajax25g for sharing the bottle!

Clear dark yellow beer, small big bubbled head, actually just some big bubbles floating on top, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: very dirty, urine, infected stuff, sourish, overripe to rotten fruits. It doesn’t just smell weird, like the first time I had geuze, but it smells really horrible actually. MF: no carbon, medium body. Taste: sourish, bit lemony, fruity, bit sugary even, which is weird, soft bitterness. Aftertaste: lemon rind, bit nasty, bitter hops, lemony, sour touch. Maybe I’m spoiled because of all the good lambics we have here in Belgium, but hey, if you’re stealing our bugs, then don’t be surprised if we compare them to our own beers as well.
