Epic Brewing Company’s latest barrel-aged beer brings something new—wild yeast. This brew is a collaboration ale with Crooked Stave Artisan Brewing of Fort Collins, Colorado. Chad Yakobson, Brewmaster/Owner of Crooked Stave, is well known for his skill and knowledge in the brewing of sour and Brettanomyces driven beers. The beer was brewed at Epic by the two brewers. Kevin Crompton, Epic’s Brewmaster, and Chad spent several weeks working on the recipe and selecting the proper Brett strains and barrels for the beer to morph from a golden Saison into a Saison-Brett Golden Ale.

Bottle @ The BeerMongers... Poured clear golden with a thin white head. Nose was insane on this. Great yeast funk and acidity with mild wood notes and a dab of candied grains. Tasted just as good but the nose was so inviting on this beer. Acidic and tart but insanely well balanced. Some sweetness with light fruits like apples or apricots. Some funk and wood but all balanced and working well together. I could drink this all day.

In short: An original, refreshing, very bright and moderately wild/barnyard amber Saison. Truly excellent.
How: Bottle 22oz, batch 1, consumed 9 months after the beer release. Bottle sent to me by tyler_mn, thanks a lot Tyler.
The look: Cloudy glowing golden-amber body topped by a small white head.
In long: Nose is moderately bretty with a very bright farmhouse character, a nice breeze in a coutryside flower field and a not-so-dirty horse blanket. Taste is also very bright. A nice bright restrained brett character, very clean for a brett beer with the brett bringing sharp funky grapefruity edges. A wheat-like malt backbone, a refreshing mild acidity/tartness, a fresh bowl of fruit salad, pleasant cheesy notes. Sweetness sensation is very low. Salty/minerals mouthdrying finish along with some white grapefruits. Everything worked so well in this beer, nothing is overdone, it tasted unique in a way I have a hard time to put into words. Brett beers can be tricky, never know when is the best time to open them, not sure if it because I just waited the perfect amount of time before opening this particular bottle, but I thought this beer was fantastic, an wonderful surprise considering the so-so ratings indicate. I liked it so much that I texted my friend who sent me the bottle a “:)”, the first time I text a smiley face, because the last time I was this happy there was only rotary phones.

Good stuff. Similar in aroma and flavor to the colaboration between Sierra Nevada and Russian River Brux ale. Very light oak. Seems young. Tasty though. Raw lemon, tart apple, wheat. No sediment. Aroma sour tart Belgium. A bit too sweet & slick. Nice carbonation. Think of a Leffe gone sour. Delicious.

Hazy gold beer, tidy white head. Palate is light and dry with mild fine carbonation. Mild Belgian yeast flavour and seltzer minerals. Mild orange and lemon citrus. Semi dry finish. Needs something more for the yeast to work on. Yeast alone does not make a beer!

From a bottle poured a straw color with a fair amount of head. Light sour malty flavor with a lingering aftertaste.

This was purchased at Paul’s Market in McCall, ID where I have found no end of interesting beers. Of the two bottles, one went to my great trading buddy Strykzone in the mid-west. We sampled it together via Facebook Chat. From the 22 oz bottle marked Release 2, ABV 9.6. This poured a very clear ice tea color with a good sized and long lasting white head and moderate lacing rings. Nose is a sour apple and fruit aroma. Medium in body and smooth of mouthfeel there is absolutely no trace of the alcohol. The flavor is sour apples with brett there but in good control. The finish was a prefect sour in my opinion and made made the beer very refreshing. Really great beer.

Release #2 this beer is a great sasion/sour. It is very similar to Russian River’s temptation. Not incredibly overpowering but nice sour bite to it.

Bottle from Hayduke with whom I enjoyed it via facebook chat. This poured a kind of green tea brown with a smallish head. Berries were smelled from a distance but brett when closer to the glass. It had a nice maltiness. Grapes and apples were tasted and a little vanilla. Brett was obvious but was not overdone. This beer drinks like a session beer and that 9.5% is nothing but dangerous. It was refreshing in a summer beer way and interesting, especially the brett. The alcohol makes this a winter warmer.

Bottle. Pours a clear copper color with a very small head. Nose is a little sour with a little bit of spice and a slight sour. Taste is a tad sour with just a hint of sweetness on the back end. Light and easy to drink.
