Epic Brewing Company’s latest barrel-aged beer brings something new—wild yeast. This brew is a collaboration ale with Crooked Stave Artisan Brewing of Fort Collins, Colorado. Chad Yakobson, Brewmaster/Owner of Crooked Stave, is well known for his skill and knowledge in the brewing of sour and Brettanomyces driven beers. The beer was brewed at Epic by the two brewers. Kevin Crompton, Epic’s Brewmaster, and Chad spent several weeks working on the recipe and selecting the proper Brett strains and barrels for the beer to morph from a golden Saison into a Saison-Brett Golden Ale.

Black Squirrel, DC tap: Pours slightly hazed golden with a very little head. Aroma is funky, vinous, lemony, with a hint of candy. Reminds me a bit of lemon drops. Tastes like a straight saison with a significant sour component. Sourness is mild to moderate level. Nice little aftertaste. Low carbonation, which allows for quick drinking.

22oz bottle pours a clear gold with some clumpy, white head. Nose is really nice and inviting, herbal, sweet, a little muscat grape, a little candy sugar, yeast, flowers. Flavor is sugary, chrysanthemum, apple cider, pear, candy sugar, slight boozy. Full, sweet, slightly hot finish.

Poured into a tulip out of a 22oz bomber. Pours a clear medium gold with barely some thin wispy traces of a head. Plenty of carbonation with small bubbles rising throughout but all quickly dissipate when they reach the surface. No lacing either. An average amount of funk in the aroma but not quite to the level that I was expecting. A little bit of grape and oak reminiscent of a Chardonnay along with lemon/lime and some white bread. The brett is even less pronounced in the flavor, unfortunately. There is more grape skin and oak but it is subdued as well. A bit of tart lemon and lime come through nicely complimenting the tartness from the wild yeast. Mouthfeel is a bit thin which is ok for the style but the finish is not at all crisp and dry like it should be. Overall, I am a bit disappointed with this beer. I really wish all of the flavors were more forward and less muddled. I was really hoping this was going to be a Brett bomb. An ok beer but really not worth putting tons of effort into seeking out.

Bottle from the Best Damn Beer Shop in San Diego. Pours clear golden with a fluffy white head and a sour fruity aroma. There is a fairly sour lime taste with a dry finish and a nice yeast presence.

translucent gold, thin white ring, oily. Of course Brett nose, hints of Chardonnay, . heavy sulfuric Brett flavor, white grape mid with light sugary apple and bit of booze. Thin, slick profile accents one-note profile.

Clear pale yellow pour with a few bubbles and a thin white head. Strong fruity oak aroma. Lightly bready with some noticeable alcohol. Lightly sweet bready aroma. Some tartness with wine notes. Buttery popcorn. Dry hoppy finish.

22, Thanks Shawn! Pours a cloudy medium amber with a dense and creamy white head. Nose is a great combination of dandelion greens, minerals, and a light orange peel tang. Creamy medium body with lively carb. Caramel, dandelions, mineral, and oranges on the mid palate. Long, settling tangy finish.

22oz Bottle pours out crisp and clean light golden topped with a small soap ring head. Aroma of sweetness, green apple, brett, and toast. Taste is more of the green apples and brett. This was a great gift from my lovely wife. Along with my 7th RB aniv. today I had to at least put in a review.

Golden in color with not much head. Smells of a tart crisp apple with some funk. Tastes of white wine and tart apples, plus the brett. Love this beer!

Release #2, 22 oz. Bottle. Pours a clear straw with a half finger of white head. Really does not look like your average brett beer. Aroma is moderately funky, barnyard, fruity, with hints of wine. Flavor is mildy sour up front, building slightly. Fades into tart apple, pear, and wheat. Slightly oaky, bitter, fruity, alcoholic finish that lingers momentarily. Moderate carbonation and medium body, with a slightly oily, astringent, warm finish. This beer does a good job masking the alcohol but i am not a fan of the finish, not quite as clean as I’d have hoped. A pretty good sour, glad I was able to try it.
