Epic Brewing Company’s latest barrel-aged beer brings something new—wild yeast. This brew is a collaboration ale with Crooked Stave Artisan Brewing of Fort Collins, Colorado. Chad Yakobson, Brewmaster/Owner of Crooked Stave, is well known for his skill and knowledge in the brewing of sour and Brettanomyces driven beers. The beer was brewed at Epic by the two brewers. Kevin Crompton, Epic’s Brewmaster, and Chad spent several weeks working on the recipe and selecting the proper Brett strains and barrels for the beer to morph from a golden Saison into a Saison-Brett Golden Ale.

Other than smelling excellent like a fresh apple, I did not enjoy this. The Brett certainly made it funkier but also flatter. The flavor didn’t work me or my stomach.

Tasted on 8/31/13 from a capped 22oz bottle. Pours hazy yellow with a thick white head that leaves average lace. The nose is funky brett with some spicy yeast and a lightly sweet oaked vinous note. The flavor is all about the yeast that is both spicy and funky, a touch of vinous oak, with an added biscuit malt note. The body is medium with lively carbonation and a long oaky vinous and spicy yeast finish.

From the JRHB brett meeting. Pleasantly surprised at how good this was. Poured a hazy gold, good head. Aroma of funk, light citrus, touch of pepper. Flavor matched, good malt backbone still there, but bone dry finish. Great balance in the flavors. Really liked it.

Pours gold with very small white head out of bottle. Sour aroma of wild yeast with hints of citrus and pear. Flavor sour with a citrus after taste. Good beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Clear golden pour with a white head and nice lacing. Aroma is dusty funk, green apple, white wine, and wet wood. Taste has a nice tartness and funk to it. Tart green apple, funk, white wine, wood, and some spice. Light dry body. Very good beer.

First bottle of 2015. Pours a deep golden yellow haze with significant head and carbonation. Aroma is mostly brett, light fruits, cereal, hay, and horse blanket. The taste is pleasant with a fruit and brett forward body, cereal, horse barn, and cheese. Big carb. Light body. Somewhat dry. Very flavorful. Tingly mouth.

Bottle pours out crisp and clean light golden topped with a small soap ring head. Aroma of sweetness, green apple, brett, and toast. Taste is more of the green apples and brett.

Pours golden with a mild haziness and a white head. The aroma has bright vinegar, citrus sourness, earthy bugs, oak and some passion fruit. It has a medium / light body with some mild sharp carbonation. The flavor starts more balanced with pale malt, grain aspects, earthy bugs, light vinegar, bright fruit and tartness. The finish has a refreshing sourness, minor alcohol and a touch of lacto sourness. Really nicely done.

Somewhat hazy golden pour. Getting some buttered popcorn in here. Slight tartness. Okay.
