Epic Brewing Company’s latest barrel-aged beer brings something new—wild yeast. This brew is a collaboration ale with Crooked Stave Artisan Brewing of Fort Collins, Colorado. Chad Yakobson, Brewmaster/Owner of Crooked Stave, is well known for his skill and knowledge in the brewing of sour and Brettanomyces driven beers. The beer was brewed at Epic by the two brewers. Kevin Crompton, Epic’s Brewmaster, and Chad spent several weeks working on the recipe and selecting the proper Brett strains and barrels for the beer to morph from a golden Saison into a Saison-Brett Golden Ale.

Hazy dark golden color with a small, white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of brett, wild yeast, sweeter light fruits, vanilla, citrus, and green grapes. Taste of citrus, wood, wild yeast, tropical fruits, and a sour finish.

Pours quite hazy amber with a sandy-colored ring on top. The aroma is sweet and tart yeast like candy, just like I like! The flavor brings sweet tart candy literally lingering on the palate endlessly, nicely tempting tongues ’til the end.

Hazy deep blond color with medium sized head. Deep aroma, vinous, with strong Brett, and delicate fruitiness; lightly footy, cobwebs, wet mossy wood. Soft mouthfeel, highly carbonated, off-dry; mild malt profile, but with a pleasant vinous character, fruity, hint of stone fruits, some Brett, woody finish; it has a light acidity level.
Nice beer, but the aroma is more interesting than the flavor.

Release #1, sat in my cellar for what seems like 2 years? Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a huge white head. Lemongrass nose, with a touch of stone fruit. Big funk. Bright citrus and spice. Oak. Wet grass. Sharp mouthfeel. A little phenolic in the finish, leaving the tongue a little tingly. I recall having this fresh and did not think it had much character. Glad I set this one down for a while!

Pale yellow, thin head. The aroma has pedio, florals and just a dash of brett. Leads with tartness, fruity-berryish, and it finishes a bit tart.

This is a simple beer, but extremely well executed, in my opinion. The brett is done nicely. Golden pour with a generous creamy white head. A nice tartness from the brett. Sour apple, with the typical horse blanket flavor, but not puckering sour that can detract or be too overwhelming. This is a beer that I purchase every once in a while. Too pricey for a go to beer, but I really enjoy this when the money is set aside for a bottle.

Bottle courtesy of Andrew shared with Andrew and Brendan. Pours a hazy golden body with thin tightly bubbled white lacing. Aroma is funky lemon and musky Brett. Mouthfeel is sour with notes of lemon Brett funkiness, sourdough , yeast and light earthy character. Nice.
