COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Epic Brewing Company’s latest barrel-aged beer brings something new—wild yeast. This brew is a collaboration ale with Crooked Stave Artisan Brewing of Fort Collins, Colorado. Chad Yakobson, Brewmaster/Owner of Crooked Stave, is well known for his skill and knowledge in the brewing of sour and Brettanomyces driven beers. The beer was brewed at Epic by the two brewers. Kevin Crompton, Epic’s Brewmaster, and Chad spent several weeks working on the recipe and selecting the proper Brett strains and barrels for the beer to morph from a golden Saison into a Saison-Brett Golden Ale.

From a bomber into a Duvel tulip. Pours a verrrrrrry light yellow, almost disturbingly so. No head or lacing. Mouthfeel is light. Aroma is bretty and Limey. Taste is an odd but pleasing combination of tang, wine, funk and tangerine. Very good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

22oz bomber from Sun Devil (wow, $12?) pours with a crystal clear gold body supporting a weak white head. The aroma offers up wafer thin citrus lemon and lime and then soured lime and grapefruit peel with mild funky citrus earthiness in the background. The taste has a long narrow jab of Brett-y tartness but I get complimentary sweet fruity ester notes like peach, green apple and apricot creating an interesting balance. This is nice stuff where the ABV is well hidden away.

Bottle. Golden hue with a hint of orange. Thin but sticky head. There’s an almost orange/citrus sweetness looming in the background, but once fully across the tongue, the wild yeastiness takes over all the way. Interesting combination. Nice on the first hot night of the year. (#4976, 4/9/2013)

Bottle. Pours a clear golden with a ring of white head. Aroma is tart but superacidic, in a bad way. Flavor is not good. just weird. Some saisony spice, sourness and a horribly bad off-taste. Not good.

Release #2 - 22 oz. bottle. Pours a slightly hazed pale gold with a thin white head that quickly vaporizes and leaves no lace. Pleasant aroma of tart fruit and some mild barnyard funk. The flavor is again fruity with a nice bright tartness, a bit of mild oak, and some moderate funk from the brett. I like that the brett hasn’t completely taken over and that there is some plenty of the original saison present. Dries out towards the finish. Light-medium bodied. Solid ale.

January 2013. 22 oz. bottle. Lots of things going on in this beer. Murky, spicy, grassy notes, bitter and hoppy finish. Good stuff.

pale golden color. Tons of Brett from start to finish with a bit of oak, light body, slightly acidic. Dry well balanced . Phenolic. Wow, great sour beer without being in your face.

Bottle thanks to adnielsen, Bitchin bottle man ! Pours a light golden straw color with a three finger fizzy foam. Aromas are a touch of sweet tarts, pineapple, barnyard brett funk and a touch of vanilla. The palate is a tad thin but the flavors are spot on and very well balanced. Nice tropical peachy pineapple notes mingle with more rustic barnyard brett character with a nice vinous acidity that carries the finish out in a tongue tingling hey you want to guzzle this shit kind of way ! Tasty !

Yellow pour. Tart fruits on the nose with a bit of barnyard as well. Sourness fades into peach and apple flavors. A very dry and crisp finish.

Mail-order bottle. Pours a deep gold with a huge head. Nose is funky and tart. Drew’s right, smarties. Earthy with a lemon note and some sweetness to the nose. Low phenol, faint peppery notes. On tasting, it is quite sweet and overbodied. A touch boozy. Does have some drying from the brett, along with that smarties tart note but not really a great example overall. Meh.
