Epic Brewing Company’s latest barrel-aged beer brings something new—wild yeast. This brew is a collaboration ale with Crooked Stave Artisan Brewing of Fort Collins, Colorado. Chad Yakobson, Brewmaster/Owner of Crooked Stave, is well known for his skill and knowledge in the brewing of sour and Brettanomyces driven beers. The beer was brewed at Epic by the two brewers. Kevin Crompton, Epic’s Brewmaster, and Chad spent several weeks working on the recipe and selecting the proper Brett strains and barrels for the beer to morph from a golden Saison into a Saison-Brett Golden Ale.

Golden in color with not much head. Smells of a tart crisp apple with some funk. Tastes of white wine and tart apples, plus the brett. Love this beer!

Pours a clear, pale golden orange color with yellowish-gold hues and a two finger, pillowy white head that very slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Excellent retention with streaks of soapy lacing coating the glass on the way down. A bit lighter/paler than expected but otherwise looks very inticing. Musty aroma with a strong funky brett presence that nicely complimented by earthy farmhouse yeast, peppery spice, ester-y light fruit and boozy sweetness. Smells surprisingly similar to Orval but a little less funky and with a delicate vinous wine barrel character. There’s a touch of damp oak along with sweet vinous fruit, especially grape, cider and pear. Some peppery spice along with bread, wild bugs and pale biscuit-like malt. The nose of this beer is very inviting with a great balance of wine barrel, farmhouse funk and wild yeast. On the fuller end of medium body with soft carbonation and a prominent wine barrel presence that slightly overwhelms the saison flavors. Along with the barrel notes, there’s a delicate brett character that compliments the funky farmhouse yeast. The brett/wild yeast isn’t as strong as the nose suggests which is kind of a disappointment because it was so pleasant in the aroma. The barrel flavors are pleasant with some dry, charred oak and sweet vinous fruit but the saison/farmhouse notes are somewhat buried and the brett character is minimal. Lots of vinous and light fruit sweetness with light grape, apple, pear and banana. There’s a touch of bubblegum and some boozy sweetness in the finish but the high ABV is decently masked. Pretty easy to drink but a bit one dimensional and lacking in complexity. This was a promising collaboration but the barrel notes are too strong for my liking, overpowering the brettanomyces strains and farmhouse funk.

Bottle, Release 6. Pours a clear gold with just a hint of gooseberry green; there is a lot of visible carbonation and the head is white, mixed-grain, mashed-potato fluffy, with sticky lace. Nose is stone fruit, yeast, barnyard, winery floor, old barrels, hard cheese, and acetic acid. On the tongue, it starts off with earth, dirt, mushrooms, and tart gooseberries -- much tastier than it sounds, I promise -- then shifts into washed-rind cheese, white wine vinegar, bitter herbs, and anise/fennel. Finish is long, warm, and acidic. The sourness, far from being dominant, is a complementary component to the gnarly earthy flavors, and it’s a marriage that works quite well.

[7149-20150314] 1pt6floz bottle. Yeasty and cheesy and mild green leaf plastic aroma. Hazy, pale yellow orange body with a medium-lasting foamy white head. Tart cheesy yeast and mild plastic flavour. Medium body is sour. Interesting but a little plasticky. (7/3/6/3/14) 3.3

My first Brett beer, I opened it way early just to see what a "young" Brett tastes like. This one threw off a lot band-aid in the aroma so that was good to experience. Also the taste came off with the antiseptic and slight rubbery notes I hear young Brett beers are often prone to. I bought a second bottle and look forward to popping it in a year or so. Otherwise, I love what this beer wants to become. Mouthfeel is great, color and carbonation are really nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
