Hopulent IPA is a big beer with lots of complex malt flavor and excessive hops. This beer will have changes to the grain bill and seasonal hop changes. The character of Hopulent IPA is over the top, too much of everything—a real HOP HEADS DELIGHT!

Golden orange cloudy pour with small head. Aroma of pine, citrus and hops. Taste of grapefruit, malt and a hoppy finish. Alcohol well hidden. Good beer.

The previous Epic beers had been solid so I thought this one might be excellent as well. While not terrible it just felt lacking compared to its cheaper kin (Spiral Jetty). Presented the option between the two in the future I may go for the slightly lighter IPA instead. Even so I would recommend checking it out if you have an interest in how different states interpret the style.

Aroma / Appearance - The bubbly head surged like whipped cream to the lip of the glass. A shallow bronze head eventually formed underneath with the hue of autumnal leaves in midtransition. An even mix of pine sol, orange polish, and toasted rye bread create a warm bitter impression on the nose. The hops were fresh but somehow felt just a little flat and lifeless.

Flavor / Palate - Chewy warm resin, pine chips, orange rinds, and other citrus notes crawl across the tongue. Hitting the senses like medium grit sandpaper the dry bitter aftertaste clings in the throat. Somewhere between a Midwestern and West Coast version in the end it just does not excite me that much. I will probably be looking for more local options next time I visit the store.

Bottle. Cloudy orange with a small white head, good lacing. Nose of rich resinous pine, citrus, light booze. Flavor is more of the same, quite resinous, boozy, some sweeter malts. Solid beer, but too boozy for me.

Oooooh yeah boyeeeeeee double IPAs! This poured an orange color with a white head. The aroma is very piney with some oranges, lemons, apricots even, and some perfume too. The flavor is very bitter with some lemons and oranges. There is a good malt presence to counteract the bitter. Overall a damn fine IIPA!

Sample at the Epic tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 8/11/11. Hazy orange pour with a medium off-white head. Piney and citrusy hop aroma with a bit of malt. Citrusy and piney hop flavor up front, then some malt before a grassy and piney hop finish.

Release # 23. Smells like a IPA, man, you know what I mean? Yeah, that’s what I’m talkin’ about. Very fruity, citrusy - mango, grapefruit, the usual suspects. Nice hop bitterness dominates the flavor, as it should. Tasty stuff.

Sample at a tasting at Suttree’s. Pours hazy orange with whitish head. The aroma is strong citrus- peach, mango, tangerine. The flavor is grapefruit, mango, ample amount of bitterness. Fruity finish. A solid American IPA.

22 ounce bottle. Batch #23 (brewed on June 14, 2011 as stated on Epic’s website), 8.6% ABV. Served in a snifter, the beer pours a hazy orange/gold color with an inch and a half frothy off-white head. The head retention is good, and there’s a lot of lacing left on the glass. Aroma is mostly citrusy hops (grapefruit, tropical fruit, orange peel), along with some pine hops and sweet malt. Taste is similar to the aroma, but the the pine and grassy hop flavors are stronger compared to the citrus hop and malty ones. There’s also a long lasting bitter finish. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s a bit slick with moderate carbonation. I think it’s a good brew, I’d like to try a fresher bottle of this next time.

Pours an amber color with an off-white head. Aroma is of caramel malts, and citrus hops. Flavor is pretty much the same with the strong flavor of citrus and pine hops and some caramel malts.

Bottle. Hazy dark orange pour, lasting creamy head and a rich orange hop aroma. Flavor has a nice maltly backbone, and then overpowering pine sol hops and bitters & boozy on the aftertaste. This beer probably would have been a bit better if the alcohol content were lower.
