COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Hopulent IPA is a big beer with lots of complex malt flavor and excessive hops. This beer will have changes to the grain bill and seasonal hop changes. The character of Hopulent IPA is over the top, too much of everything—a real HOP HEADS DELIGHT!

22 oz. bottle from Total Wine in Chesapeake, VA (Release 14 bottled March 21, 2011, 8.6% ABV). Murky yellowish-orange pour with a creamy off-white head. Aroma of pineapple, mango, tangerine, and pineapple. Juicy citrus hop flavor of orange, pineapple, and grapefruit with just enough sweetness to not completely overwhelm the palate. An outstanding DIPA.

Bottle. Nice, hoppy aroma. Hazy copper with a large, frothy off white head. Tastes pretty hot for only 8.3% abv. Otherwise very nicely balanced.Nice lace. Some pepper. Pervasive alcoholic taste keeps this from being really good.

Not as hoppy as one would expect a double IPA to be. Looks like one, cloudy orange with medium white head. Much lacing, Light hop aroma. Full bodied. Doesn’t taste as strong as it is. Nice hop finish.

Bottle. Pours out an orange color with a nice white head on it. Smell is very piney and full of grapefruit and orange. Taste is sweet and smooth, very little alcohol is noted. Sadly the taste is lacking in some aspects; if only this beer was as good as it smelled.

Not a bad IPA, it is a bit resiny and sweet for my tastes though. A touch of alchohol in there also.

Golden orange cloudy pour with small head. Aroma of pine, citrus and hops. Taste of grapefruit, malt and a hoppy finish. Alcohol well hidden. Good beer.

The previous Epic beers had been solid so I thought this one might be excellent as well. While not terrible it just felt lacking compared to its cheaper kin (Spiral Jetty). Presented the option between the two in the future I may go for the slightly lighter IPA instead. Even so I would recommend checking it out if you have an interest in how different states interpret the style.

Aroma / Appearance - The bubbly head surged like whipped cream to the lip of the glass. A shallow bronze head eventually formed underneath with the hue of autumnal leaves in midtransition. An even mix of pine sol, orange polish, and toasted rye bread create a warm bitter impression on the nose. The hops were fresh but somehow felt just a little flat and lifeless.

Flavor / Palate - Chewy warm resin, pine chips, orange rinds, and other citrus notes crawl across the tongue. Hitting the senses like medium grit sandpaper the dry bitter aftertaste clings in the throat. Somewhere between a Midwestern and West Coast version in the end it just does not excite me that much. I will probably be looking for more local options next time I visit the store.

Bottle. Cloudy orange with a small white head, good lacing. Nose of rich resinous pine, citrus, light booze. Flavor is more of the same, quite resinous, boozy, some sweeter malts. Solid beer, but too boozy for me.

Oooooh yeah boyeeeeeee double IPAs! This poured an orange color with a white head. The aroma is very piney with some oranges, lemons, apricots even, and some perfume too. The flavor is very bitter with some lemons and oranges. There is a good malt presence to counteract the bitter. Overall a damn fine IIPA!

Sample at the Epic tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 8/11/11. Hazy orange pour with a medium off-white head. Piney and citrusy hop aroma with a bit of malt. Citrusy and piney hop flavor up front, then some malt before a grassy and piney hop finish.
