3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Begins with a punch of pine hops, that fades into a caramel aroma. Pours a dark red, that can be seen through when held up to the light, with a lasting white head. Dark fruit notes come forward in this beer, with support from the malts. It ends in a roasted finish, with hints of bitterness coming through. Very interesting Imperial Red, although I donít know if Iíd say itís extremely strong at 8% ABV.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Draft at a local. Release # 13. Pours a thin ivory head, over a hazy light brown (SRM 20) body.....nose is cereal, roasted malts, with cocoa tones, hints of pine and citrus from the hops, minimal esters......taste is cereal, with light roasted malt tones including cocoa, finishing with a harsh hop bite......mouth feel medium, slightly sticky, alcohol hidden, clean acid finish. The hops are a bit harsh on the finish, dominating the malts and making for an unbalanced beer. It would be better with less bitter hops, a bit more in the dry hopped, and an increase in malt complexity. BJCP 7/3/11/4/6

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bomber of batch 27, 7.7% abv from the brewery. Pours rich red with a white head. The aroma is plenty hoppy with a sturdy malt backbone. The hop aroma or flavor doesnít come out as much I like from the style, but there certainly is a strong bitterness present. There are hints of grass, pine and resin with caramel and biscuits for balance. The flavor has sweet hints at brown sugar that remind me of their IIPA. Similar to that one, the hops here are very bitter and cut through the palate while not having an overly broad or deep character. If a beer is going to be crammed full of hops I want some greener, fresher qualities. I consider Arrogant Bastard to be the benchmark of this style and having this makes me crave one.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Impressive hop character for American strong ale, grassy and citrus fruity, covered with pleasant intense malt background, wood, pine. Sweet with moderate to intense bitterness. Bit astringent. Wow.. huge beer with perfect balance. Really enjoyable brew. Reminds me of amber ale.. oh wait.. Imperial red! X)

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Release #30 - 7.8% ABV Epic Imperial Red is a bit cloudy and malt forward but has great hop flavor. The hops are not particularly complex but the balance between malt, yeast and hops provides for the nuances of each to manifest somewhat.

Tap @ the brewery tap room. Pours a clear reddish brew with a small off white head on top. Aroma is very malty, caramel and some fresh barley. Flavour is medium bitter, nutty, and big on dry grapefruit flavors. Nice, easy going, hoppy and malty brew.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle from Utah Liquor Store. Pours amber with an inch of khaki foam. Leaves a lot of lacing. Fairly hop forward on the nose and tongue. Finish lingers a bit. Feels unbalanced to me. Not my favorite from Epic.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Not normally a fan of red ales, but this one is awesome! So good I have brewed ~30 gallons myself and the original and clone version is great. Strong, but now overwhelming hops, great color and palate. The entire package is unforgettable! Epic has many great offerings, this is among their best.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Release #20, 8.7% ABV. Bottled Oct. 2012. Pours a deep cloudy ruby with a thick khaki-toffee head that settles to a ring and leaves some spotty lace. nose involves big toffee and caramel malt notes, some nice pine, spice and herbal hops, a suggestion of smoke, some dark cherry and plum fruit notes. Quite sweet flavor, but also fairly bitter, nicely balanced. Fuller side of medium bodied, creamy, active, vibrant yet slick and oily, juicy, with a lengthy drying herbal bitter finish. Really awesome brew, considering it was pushing toward a year old, it rounded out nicely and the hops still played a prominent role. Loved it.
