Pours a beautiful extremely dark brown with a smallish head. Great notes of smokiness and roasting to the nose, with good maltiness to the taste. But with this, its easy on the palate. This is one of the examples of why I love Imperial Stouts.

A - Pours a dark brown-black with a finger of frothy chocolate colored head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lacing. S - Aroma is a mix of roasted dark chocolate malts, with some raisin and other dark fruits, coffee, molasses, black licorice, vanilla, and a bit of booze. T - Starts off with some roasted dark chocolate malts with some raisin and other dark fruits and some black licorice. Through the middle, some molasses and a bit of vanilla comes through with some coffee. The finish is a mix of roasted dark chocolate, coffee, black licorice, molasses, and a bit of booze. M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth and a bit thick with a warming and sweet finish. D - Very drinkable. Nicely balanced with a good balance of manliness other flavors and body.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, batch 3 bottled 2/14/2011. Pours pitch black color with a nice 1-2 finger dense mocha colored head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Some good soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of dark chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, toffee, apple, raisin, char, biscuit, earth, and light herbal spiciness. Pretty nice aromas with good balance and complexity; a bit too fruity from the yeast. Taste of big dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, caramel, toffee, biscuit, toast, earth, charred malt, nuttiness, and herbal spiciness. Good amount of spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, toffee, toast, biscuit, coffee, and herbal spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice flavor balance and complexity; with a good balance of bitterness and malt flavors. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a fairly creamy and slick mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very nice imperial stout. Nice roasted malt and hop flavor complexity with good balance. Very enjoyable offering.

Nickls (1857) - Washington, Washington DC, USA - JUL 31, 2012
Bottle. Release #5, 8.9%. Dark khaki head on a dense black body. Cocoa, dark chocolate, slight sweetness and booze in the aroma. Touch roasty in addition to the sweeter chocolate notes and cocoa powder, with a touch of a savory ending. Medium body with softer carbonation. Not bad but pretty straightforward and not all that interesting.

Black pour with a creamy, tan, persistent head. I think I see some floaties at the bottom of the glass (yeast? looks like it but its hard to tell). Aroma is cola, dark fruit, hint of coffee, hint of bakers chocolate. Sweet on the front and mid palate and finishes bittersweet. Low carbonation, full body, moderately low alcohol warmth. I expected a little bit more from this one in terms of complexity. Also not too sure whats up with the floaties in the appearance - Ive never seen something like that in an imperial stout.

Deep black pour, nice dark brown head, though large bubbles. Toasted malt, chocolate, and molasses/caramel sweetness with a bit of alcohol burn.

From the State Liquor Store in Salt Lake City brought back by my brother Rick on a recent trip. Pours pretty much an opaque black with a robust tan head and excellent lacing. The nose is chocolate roasted malts with a little coffee as well Body is between medium and full and the mouthfeel is creamy and alcoholic. The flavor is rich roasted malts showing lost of dark chocolate, coffee and bittering hops right through the dry finish. Except for the alcohol burn this is darn near perfect. Good drinking.

Sampled at Slutfest 3. Dark brown near black pour with ring of tan head. Very delicous. Good roastiness and chocolate and and vanilla. good example of the style Id say.
