Nephilium (1263) - Ohio, USA - DEC 28, 2011
(Release #3; ABV 9.1%) This begins with a mild roasty aroma, and pours an opaque pitch black with a full dark tan head. The flavor is predominantly roasted notes, with a touch of heat from the alcohol. The finish is long, and filled with coffee notes. This is a quite good Imperial Stout, I’d be curious to see how it holds up over a couple of years.

Ernest (6031) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - DEC 21, 2011
Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is almost opaque black (flashlight tested). Aroma is moderately to heavily malty (chocolate, roasted grain), lightly hoppy (flowers), with notes of vanilla and blackberry. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter, slightly husky. Medium to full body, creamy texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Straightforward and overly sweet, but pretty decent. Nice berry undertones.

bottle, release #3... light black with a light ta head, only leaves a light watery ring... weird off aroma, burnt cocoa, a little vanilla, generic chemical... the taste is equally unimpressive, burnt roasted cocoa, a bit marshmellow, this is not good... pass

Poured into a snifter. Release #3, 9.1% ABV, 1,800 bottles. 3.5 A: Black color. Two and a half fingers of frothy/creamy hybrid head. Retention is average and a decent sized ring of lacing is left behind. 4.0 S: Good amount of roastiness to this. Stemming from that roast are dark caramel, semisweet chocolate, and hints of coffee. Molasses is abundant. Malts are decisively grainy, but a lot of that aroma is lost from the roasted aromas. Moderately sweet overall. 4.0 T: The taste approximates the nose well. Hefty roast with plenty of dark caramel, molasses, and semisweet chocolate. Coffee again minimal. A lot more burnt than the nose suggest, but not distractingly so. There seems to be some hop bitterness in this that compounds with the bitterness from the roast. A good bit dryer than the nose, putting this at the middle of the spectrum. 4.0 M: Heavier medium to lighter heavy body. Good moderate carbonation. Good creaminess to this with a roasty aftertaste that affects the smoothness a bit. Borderline 4.5 4.0 D: Solid brew all around, though it seems like there are a good number of bad bottles floating around. At $8 for the bomber, I’d say the risk is worth it. Anyway, this beer doesn’t stand out from about a million other imperial stouts, but it is tasty nonetheless. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 10-20-2011 03:45:46

22 oz. bottle, split with Matts_Property, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of medium roast, espresso and some chalk. Flavour is very roasty with a high hop presence, some sweet chocolate malts and some booze on the finish. Medium complexity with a roasty, chocolatey, boozy finish. Very good.

Bottle. Poured a dark brown color with a large frothy brown head that lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted chocolate, caramel and alcohol aroma. Medium to heavy bittersweet roasted black coffee malty flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet and small alcohol bite finish of moderate to long duration. Full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is a very good beer.

UPDATED: JAN 17, 2012 Thanks turd. Pours dark black with no light coming through and one finger of chestnut brown head. Nose is bleh, lots of fruity yeast esters and acetaldehyde, light oxidation and fruit skins. Same flavor, bleh. Papery with some oxidation with lots of off yeast flavors. Bleeeeeeh. No more description.

22 oz. bottle shared by Tmoney99. Pours dark brown to black with a small beige head. The aroma had creamy chocolate, roasted malts, light coffee and ash. The flavor had more roast than the nose, char, dark chocolate, black coffee with decent bitterness to the finish. Medium plus body, dry and fairly smooth.

Release 3 bomber from Total Wine Chesapeake, VA. Pours very dark brown with a thin tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel, chocolate and a bit of a leathery note. The taste is bitter roasted malts, coffee syrup, caramel, chocolate, vanilla, and a bitter hop finish. Medium-full bodied. Nice.
