3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 BenH (518) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - NOV 13, 2011
Not sure what qualifies this as an American strong ale, clearly a pale ale. Pours amber orange, no head. Huge hop aroma, citrus, soap, pine, resin, caramel malt. Taste is similar, quite a unique hop flavour, grassy, piney, resin, lots of caramel malt. Quite sweet with a slightly bitter finish, lingering sweetness. Very good
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 PatBateman81 (123) - Caserta, ITALY - OCT 29, 2011
Bottle 50 cl tasted @ Karhisma Birroteca (Piedimonte Matese - Caserta, Italy). Clear orange/rust with just a finger of foam that vanishes immediatly. Citrus and piny aroma, leaf and something concerning a young orange when it’s green still. Some chemical notes like solvent. Light to medium fully carbonated body, and the flavor it’s like the young orange as above-mentioned as well. Carbonation is high, man, nearly disturbing. Anyway, hoppiness it’s seriously a BLOW; I don’t know which kind of hops, but could bet it’s the Cascade due to the resinous component. Finish literaly draw mouth, tongue and palate like a vacuum cleaner. You know, it has the same bitterness that of Stone or other West Coast IPA; the only pity - surely not minor - is the body, so weak. Malts vanishes in front of the hop, and that’s no good at all. Aroma has the same fault, it’s overwhelmed by hop. Too bad, it has a remarkable potential.

Found this bottle in Las Vegas after drinking several Epic Beers on a recent New Zealand trip.... Nice caramel, citrus flavor balanced with moderate hops, not overpowering.... Pretty good beer...

500ml btl from local shop. Clear, light amber pour with a short, light yellow head which fades quickly to leave moderate lace. Pine, citrus and medium-roast malt nose. Medium-light body and moderate carbonation. Spruce, orange zest, wheat toast and a hint of whiskey. Just not enough malt to support the hop profile, as I find to be true in many Epic ales. Sort of an Imperial Pale Ale to me, moreso than an ASA.
