Wow, Iíve heard a lot about this beer and I found it to be very impressive. Nice big hop aroma with good clarity of colour. A very clean, refreshing pale ale, would love to try some of their other beers.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
500 ml bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar ($8.29). Pours a murky honey amber with a finger and a half of off-white foam. Aroma is grainy-malty with significant hop notes (soap, floral, sweet citrus). Flavor is some surprisingly sharp and bitter hops for an APA with citrus and pine notes along with a smooth grainy-malt balance. Some lingering bitterness in the finish. A great APA from the Kiwis! 4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
500ml bottle. Heaven in a glass. Coppery teak colour with a red tinge when held to the light. Packed head that is bone to beige in colour. Hop aromas jump out of the glass and assault your nostrils with a sweet molten caramel aroma. Piney hop flavour is a little different but in a good way.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Iíve seen this beer on the shelf a few times but Iíve avoided it considering that itís being imported from New Zealand and I live in Kansas. Still, I saw some today and figured Iíd give them a shot. 17 ounce bomber. Pours a light amber to golden blonde with an impeccably clear appearance. Huge frothy two inch head. Impressive aroma; I have the beer sitting next to me and I am getting a clear whiff of hops - the glass is roughly 2 feet away from me. As the head dissipates the lacing is very clingy. Aroma is of citrus and pine hops with some light skunkiness in the background. Slick mouthfeel with some nice mild bitterness. Light to mild carbonation. Flavor is hops, up front. Floral hops abound up front, and thereís a nice spicy pepper note in the middle of the beer, with lingering grapefruit in the finish. The malt profile is there, as you get breadiness somewhere in the middle before going back to hops. Where this beer breaks the rules is in the finish. I get this amazing caramel sweetness aftertaste, completely the opposite of what I expect when drinking a pale ale. Outside of that, the malt is subdued, which I like. Itís a nicely understated counterpoint to all of the hops - and make no mistake, hops is what this beer is all about. More specifically, Cascade. Full Disclosure: I actually listened to an interview with Epicís brewer, and he stated the beer was only made with one hop - Cascade, which is just crazy. Thereís so much going on with the hop profile that youíd swear thereís more than just that hop in it. But no, itís just Cascade. The best thing about this beer is how clean it is. Itís super clear, very clean on the palate, and amazingly crisp when drinking. One of the best Pale Ales I have had in a very long time. Thatís not doing it enough justice. One of the best beers, period, Iíve had in a very long time. Very impressive, especially for New Zealand.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Copper with overcarbonated bubbles rising in a constant stream. Really nice nose, assertively hopped ,but the flavor canít match up. Oxidized, more of a eurostyle hop bitterness that doesnít work as well at this intensity than do some of the more familiar US west coast hop varieties. Malts arenít doing much here, just along for the ride.

I was actually a little disappointed with this beer the last time I tasted it. The punched had seemed to gone out it. It is still a nice beer though, and certainly one of the best commercial pale ales in New Zealand. The limited release beers from Epic are a much better bet.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Clear bright amber. Nicely hopped aroma is balanced by big sugars from the malts. Smells much like an old school American IPA. Has a slight booziness that seems out of place too. Smooth palate makes it go down well, with light carbonation. Thin, light body. The hops are green and leafy, but the body is too light to carry such promising flavors. Is refreshing though!
