An Epic interpretation of the recent American trend of brewing Black IPAs, our Santa Cruz Brown is a true hybrid. Inspired by our brewer Kyle’s desire to have it all!

Draft at Bubba Gumps, Monterey. Nose is light caramel, a hint of coffee, and a very light citrus. Hazy brown with a medium beige head. Flavor is lightly sweet, lightly bitter, with a caramel and lightly bitter finish.

Pours a cloudy, dark chestnut brown color that’s nearly opaque with mahogany edges and a one finger, frothy beige head that slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Streaks and spots of soapy lacing left behind. Nice looking beer. Slightly smokey, robust aroma with floral hops, lactic cream and sweeter malt notes rounding things out. Some lightly roasted coffee bean along with burnt toast, roasted nut and oatmeal followed by caramel, toffee, and chocolate. Subtle resinous, earthy hops but they don’t get in the way of the complex malt presence. Full bodied and surprisingly hop forward. Much stronger than the nose suggested with a nice balance of dry, earthy hops and light roasted malt notes. Actually not as complex as the aroma because the hop flavors are really strong and the malt presence is slightly one dimensional. Dank, earthy and bitter with lots of dry, grassy pine flavor that lingers throughout into a dry, roasty finish. As it warms, the malt flavors really come through with hints of caramel, toffee, hazelnut, chocolate and subtle roast. There’s also some subtle lactic creaminess balancing things out. Aggressively hoppy for the style but is decently balanced after the palate adjusts. Could use a bit more roast and is hop pier than I prefer for the style, but this beer is enjoyable and easy to drink. A solid beer in an under appreciated style.

Firkin pout at alefort. Pours out a muddy brown topped with a tan head. Nose is whole hop leaf roast malts and a nice floral. Taste is light roast heavy hops and a nice finish. This was very nice.

Not much hop aroma but grain nose. Hop bit and grain on the tongue. Malty more than sweet. Hoppy and malty hand in hand. Very nice head. Okay overall. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at the Denver brewery. Deep, dark brown appearance with a tan head. Aroma of roast, dark malts, nuts, earthy hops, chocolate, coffee, caramel and toffee. Similar flavor, rich with mild sweetness and medium resinous hop bitterness. Medium bodied, a nice hoppy brown ale/black IPA.

Epic taproom, GABF week 2014. Good malt flavor with some nuts. Dry and earthy. One of the better brown ales, but there is only so much that can be done with this style.

Pours a depp brown color with a roasted malt aroma. Taste is of heavy burnt malt with a tiny sweet caramel flavor. this beer tasted unfinished and was thin at the end of the beer. okay overall but underwhelming.

Pours a clear maroon brown. Hardly any head or lacing. Oak earthiness on the nose. Brown sugar, molasses, cinnamon, decent hoppy bitterness (for a brown ale). Overall, pretty good stuff.

SLC bottle from release #10. Fairly dark brown color with a big, foamy chocolate milk head that lasts a long time. Aroma is mostly hops with a hint of chocolate malt in the end. Big hops in the flavor but it does include some dark malt. Finishes with a lingering bitterness. Pretty much a "brown ale" in name only for me because this seems like a black IPA. Tasty.

My bottle was release two, two years old at the the time I opened it. This bottle of beer was fantastic. It poured dark brown with creamy foam, and the aroma was rich malt, apple-butter, caramel, mild coffee. The flavor added bready and nutty notes, and kind of a burnt-popcorn thing in the background, with some hoppy tingle on the finish. This was delicious.
