This is a Belgian-style strong ale but with an American fusion twist dreamt up by Epic. Using authentic Belgian-style yeast, this is a malt-driven beer with Maris Otter malt as a base and a hint of Pilsner malt. For the first twist we use smoked cherry wood malt that works it’s magic, bringing a smoky sweetness to the caramel malts and a bit of peat flavor as well. This ale then really marries together when it hits the cask. The entire batch aging in the whiskey barrels nicely dries out the perceived sweetness of the caramel malt leaving an almost scotch like taste, with smoke, bourbon, hints of vanilla, wood, aged fruit from the Belgian yeast and some peat. A very, very special extremely flavorful strong ale made for sharing.

Bottled sample via and shared with oakbluff. Pale amber in colour with medium carbonation and floaties. Aromas of VERY sweet vanilla caramels, fruitwood smoke, a bit of apricot and toasted malt. Quite fruity and caramel sweet in the mouth aw well, backed by some vanilla. Medium bodied. Far too sweet for my taste, and I wish the smoke had carried though in the mouth as well.

@ Havregatan. Flaska från Systembolaget (116:-). Fruktig och maltig, bourbon, små små röktoner, trä, ganska hög sötma, karamell, jästtoner, en del alkohol, medelfyllig. Mycket trevlig. [ Release #18. ]

Deep, dark orange. Nose is a bit odd with overripe peach, pear, light bourbon, sweet grain/caramel, and light ashy smoke. Flavor is similar with lightly ashy/smoked peach, bourbon, woody oak, and faint yeast. Fairly syrupy. Lingering BBQ ash/sweet bourbon-soaked fruit. A bit choppy at times. A little too much going on, not overly clean. Cherry wood may not have been the best choice of smoked malt.

Bomber poured into a tulip glass. Pours a cloudy light brown, with a big khaki head that slowly dissipates, leaving good lacing. Nose is malt and bourbon notes, with faint Belgian yeast. Taste is malt and bourbon, with a little vanilla. Outstanding.

Reddish brown, no head. Nose of burbon booze, vanilla, wood. Taste of smoke comes through first, second sip brings lots of other tastes, soured caramel, vanilla, bananas, earthy wood, salty. Finishes with a hint of booze, bitter. Feels like a barleywine with smoke and a funky yeast thrown in. Pretty good.

bomber bought @ systembolaget. Pours clear reddish brown with a rather small frothy beige head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty, phenolic and tiny smokey with caramel, smoked ham, ripe pears, hay, peat, alcohol, rubber, marzipan, caramelized apples and lemon zest. Taste is sweet, bitter, malty, phenolic and smokey with sweet dark bread, caramel, smoke, peat, caramelized apples, marzipan baked pears, alcohol, hay, plums and lemon zest. Mouthfeel is round, soft, boozy and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet, bitter, malty, phenolic and smokey with caramel, hay, minerals, unripe pears, unripe apples, marzipan, alcohol and peat. Weird...
