3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 DavoleBomb (1467) - Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 25, 2012Poured into a snifter. Release #5 with an ABV of 9.9%.
3.5 A: Ruddy brown color. Two fingers of short lived frothy beige head. No lacing.
4.5 S: I went searching for some smoke and I found it. Moderate smokiness offers what I wanted without impinging on the other aromas. Oak, too, is plentiful and perhaps more so than the smoke. Whiskey is right behind offering peat, leather, and apple fruitiness. Caramel adds a sweet maltiness to this that rounds off the main flavors. The Belgian character is minimal, but that’s only because the other flavors are so strong. If you dig deep enough you will find clove and pepper spiciness that complement the main flavors.
4.0 T: Soft and welcomed boozy whiskey bite up front. Oak and vanilla after that. Smoke isn’t as strong in the taste, but does complement well. Whiskey adds a hefty dose of apple, leather, peat, and melon. The Belgian character is much more pronounced. Light fruits, pepper and clove spice, and some plum to round things off.
4.0 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation. My only complaint is that the carbonation isn’t a bit spritzier.
4.5 T: Epic is killing it right now for me. They make some duds, but I haven’t had any in a while. Based on the trends in the reviews, it seems like they are improving with every new batch.

0.5 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 1/20 chef_brewardee (26) - Colorado, USA - JUN 18, 2013
I must have had a bad bottle. Poured a murky cloudy brown. The two esters from the smoke and Belgian yeast mixed in a way that gave it a strong medicinal aroma and taste. Also a strong aroma and taste of old meat. If i ever have the opportunity to try it again ill re review, but this bottle was terrible

Pours dark amber with a somewhat frothy head. Nose is caramel, cherries, raisins, brown sugar, dried fruit, some peat. Taste is a bit smoky upfront that gives way to overripe apple, caramel, raisins, sugar and hints of cherries and vanilla. Really quite good!!

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 esp0r (1324) - NORWAY - MAY 26, 2013
Bottle from Systembolaget enjoyed at home
Amber red, thin beige head. Smells of smoke, blue cheese, peat, malts, oak and yeast esters; one ot most unique aromas i’ve tried. Heavy sweet, alot of fruity notes, vinous characters and oak, then the smoked malts takes over. Peat, tar, smoke; just lovely and amizingly blended with the oak and fruits. Moderate bitter finish. This really is my kind of brew; bold, crossing alot of borders.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 StefanSD (1805) - Lakeside, California, USA - MAY 12, 2013
650 ml bottle from bev4less. Release #17 (10.6 abv) Pours a beautiful reddish amber color with a small beige head that quickly fizzes away. The aroma is mild with sweet malts, toffee and ripe plums. The taste is complex with vanilla, dates, plums, peat, brown sugar and toffee. The smoke if any is way in the background. The palate is full and smooth with soft carbonation. Fin ishes long and sweet. Overall: I am a bit disappointed there was not more smoke flavor, that aside the brewer did a masterful job.
