3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 DalzAle (1466) - Eden Prairie, USA - JUL 8, 2011
Bottle. Very dark black pour, very little head and a slightly sweet smoky nose. Flavor is thin biscuity malt, light roasty campfire and a bit of dry chocolate. Not bad at $5/bomber, but I wish it would have been a little more thick/creamy.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Ughsmash (5836) - Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA - APR 8, 2012
Bomber. Poured cola brown with a short-ish khaki head. The aroma picked up sweet, roasty black patent and lesser smoky malts.. just a little detergenty hop accent.. simple, but sufficient. The flavor found similar stuff.. ashy black patent malt and a little vanilla at the core.. more earthy vanilla bean and dry smoke extending outward.. tacky black malt and light smoke on the finish. Light-medium bodied and roasty on the palate.. very drinkable, but it needed a little more substance.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Ibrew2or3 (4985) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - MAR 3, 2012
22oz Release #2 bomber pours mahogany with ruby red edges and lasting light tan head that leaves behind some sheet lacing. The aroma pumps out roasted malts, bready malts, a touch of spicy black licorice and soft rauch-y smoked malts. The taste has a pretty rich sweet maltiness as well as roasted malts rolling into some earthiness and smooth smoky rauch malts. Into the finish it stays dark and roasty with subtle smoky rauch malts and a light sense of peat too.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Thorpe429 (3823) - Alexandria, Virginia, USA - FEB 13, 2012
Big thanks to ygtbsm94 for sharing this at last night’s tasting. Served in a SAVOR wine glass.
Pours a very dark brown with a short off-white head and a bit of lacing. The nose brings some heavy smoke and a bit of peat atop a bottle of roast and light chocolate. The flavor is quite smokey as well, and that really takes over the rest of the beer. The body is a bit thin with lots of smoke. Just not enough balance in this one.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Heathen (1242) - Wilmington, Delaware, USA - JAN 27, 2012
THOUGHTS: Not bad. I was hoping for something a little more extreme, but this was just well-made and easy to drink.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a dark brown with deep red highlights and an average, off-white head that mostly diminished and left excellent lacing. The aroma was nice but was a little weak compared to the flavor. There was light to moderate roasted malts and chocolate; hints of coffee; light to moderate orange citrus hops; smoke; slight cola; slight beef jerky; and slightly orangey. The initial flavor was light to mod sweet and slightly bitter; while the finish was moderately sweet, mot to heavily bitter, slightly sour, a little salty and slightly acidic with an average to long duration. There was roasted malt, smoke, a little dark chocolate, slight cola, cherry, a little bit of other fruit, caramel, a little orange, hints of tobacco, a little tar, some citrus hops, hints of Bar-B-Q-sauce and a little salt. The medium body was sort of creamy, sticky on the lips and then a little dry with fizzy carbonation and a slightly metallic finish.

Bottle from JCB. Thanks! This pours a deep brown, near black color, with a fluffy tan head on top. The aroma shows smoked malt, caramel, and a little espresso roast. The flavor; smoked wood, chocolate, as well as a touch of toffee. This gets a bit ashy, especially in the finish, but the smoke component is rather tame. I can see being disappointed if looking for aggressive smoke, but I like this beer. Very smooth, easy to drink, and pretty tasty stuff.

Bottle. Pours black with an off white head. Nose/taste of light mesquite smokiness and smoked black and chocolate malts. Body on the lighter side. Very nice slightly dry mesquite bbq finish. Tasty and sessionable.

Pours a dark chestnut brown color with mahogany edges and a 1.5 finger light beige head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Streaks of soapy lacing left behind.
Smoked malt aroma with hints of charcoal, BBQ, bacon and ash along with sweeter malt notes underneath. Subtle toasted caramel malt with some dark chocolate and oatmeal. Decently smokey but not over the top.
On the fuller end of medium bodied with a good balance of smokey and sweet malts along with a slight spicy hop presence. Smokey up front with hints of charred wood, BBQ, bacon and charcoal quickly countered by sweeter toasted malt notes. Some bitter dark chocolate and oatmeal that lingers into a bitter dry finish. Nicely balanced but this balance makes the beer tame and not as smokey as I prefer. Good but not the smoke bomb that I had hoped for. A nice intro to the style.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 emeinz (212) - Minnesota, USA - NOV 14, 2011
bottle to glass. Sweet malt aromas with smoky notes. Dark brown with medium beige head. Savory taste. The smokiness comes out as the beer warms.
i enjoy this beer, as I do every Epic beer, but its not my favorite smoked porter by any means.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Drake (5231) - Charlottesville, Virginia, USA - NOV 11, 2011
Served on draft at Capital Ale House Innsbrook. Pours a dark hazy brown color with a thin frothy creamy head tan head. Fair head retention. Aroma of smoke, roasted malts, faint fruits, and chocolate. The taste is smoke, berries, chocolate, roasted malts and faint hops. Medium bodied, slightly chalky texture.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 dmac (2660) - Toms River, New Jersey, USA - OCT 20, 2011
22 oz bomber from Spirits Red Bank. Poured a cola looking dark blackish/bown body underneath a medium super light beige foamy head. Aroma is nice with lots of sweetness fromt the malts, cola, chocolate, brown dough, green veggie hops and light camp fire in the back ground. Thin to medium body with average carbonation and despite the thin initial density it has a syrupy mouthfeel to balance out the carbonation. Flavor of lightly burnt chocolate, dark toast, cola, sugar, hint of smoke. This one is growing on me and I think it’s far better then it’s rating.
