4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 Jimthechap (1195) - Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND - MAY 9, 2011
Vintaged 2010.
I found so much to like about this beer. It could have been the time and place elements (it was smack in the middle of an Epic Brewery tasting and it mad for a pleasant distraction from lots of hoppy beers).
Smells plummy and roasty with molasses, spice and Christmas cake While it smells more fruity than anything else, it has certain oakiness about it that is rather wonderful. Tannin?
Upon tasting there is a moment of shock and surprise as the enormity of all the flavours hit you at once. Plums, molasses spicy and maturity. A perfect reflection of the aromas. When allowed to warm in the hand there’s treacle pudding, dark chocolate and burnt caramel. It becomes more herbal as you go on: rosemary and also a buttery Chardonnay-like flavour.
The brewer used brown malt for its aging capacity, Bramley Cross and Target hops and medium tasted brand new American oak barrels.
Immensely satisfying and joins the pantheon of my favourite beers. Simply outstanding.
