4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 Jimthechap (1194) - Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND - MAY 9, 2011
Vintaged 2010.
I found so much to like about this beer. It could have been the time and place elements (it was smack in the middle of an Epic Brewery tasting and it mad for a pleasant distraction from lots of hoppy beers).
Smells plummy and roasty with molasses, spice and Christmas cake While it smells more fruity than anything else, it has certain oakiness about it that is rather wonderful. Tannin?
Upon tasting there is a moment of shock and surprise as the enormity of all the flavours hit you at once. Plums, molasses spicy and maturity. A perfect reflection of the aromas. When allowed to warm in the hand there’s treacle pudding, dark chocolate and burnt caramel. It becomes more herbal as you go on: rosemary and also a buttery Chardonnay-like flavour.
The brewer used brown malt for its aging capacity, Bramley Cross and Target hops and medium tasted brand new American oak barrels.
Immensely satisfying and joins the pantheon of my favourite beers. Simply outstanding.

Bottled. Near black, beige head. Powerful aroma of licorice and grapefruit. Dry and roasty, above medium bodied and firm mouthfeel. Citrus and black currant mixes with salty tobacco. Long tarry biterness. A hoppy, aromatic yet nicely drinkable stout.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Svesse (5195) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - JAN 3, 2012
(Bottle) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Roasted, malty nose with notes of liquorice, strong black coffee, cocoa, ashes and dark rye bread. Roasted, malty taste with liquorice, black coffee, dark chocolate, a touch of tar and a generous roasty, piney bitterness in the finish. Medium body, slightly oily mouthfeel. Mainly dry, with just a hint of sweetness. Powerful, yet well balanced. Tasty and quite an excellent stout.

In bottle thanks to Colin : ) A black beer with a thick tan head. Awesome hoppy aroma of peach and passion fruit with a nice roasty malt and caramel backbone. Flavours of piney hops, dark chocolate, roasty malt and burnt toast. Nice coffee and pine finish. Moderate carbonation, mild CO2 prickle. Lovely.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Marsiblursi (2952) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - MAR 4, 2011
(Bottle) Pours black with a medium sized, light brown head. The aroma reminds me of new skateboard wheels (a distinct smell from my childhood) alongside chocolate and blackberries. Undertones of dry cocoa roast, dark caramel, vanilla, smoke, dark fruits, grassy hops and hints of milk. Nice, round and friendly nose. The flavour light sweet to dry, light to medium bitter and light sourish. Tones of chocolate, coffee, dark berries, smoke, light asphalt and dark bread. The mouthfeel is soft, clean and light tart with a light to medium carbonation. The finish is medium tart with dry roast and grassy hops. Near medium bodied.

Draught. Roasty dry and plenty of chocolate. The hops are more subtle than you expect from Luke, but it is balanced perfectly with the fruit coming through in the finish. Extremely moreish.
