3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Nikiel (790) - Portland, Oregon, USA - MAY 19, 2011
On tap at Equinox with Andrew, Carla and Natasha. Pours a deep black with tan foam. Smells roasty. Tastes very roasty and surprisingly bitter with less body than I’d like.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 BlackForestCO (958) - Aurora, Colorado, USA - JAN 23, 2011
On tap at the brewery. Poured a deep brown/black color with a thin, dense tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and a light earthy hoppiness with a touch of citrus. Smooth, sweet entry with a touch of citrus tartness and some chocolate malt leads into a light earthy hoppiness that transitions into a moderate roasty coffee flavor that lingers into the finish. Low carbonation, but a nice sharpness and hoppiness contribute to an overall balanced palate. Overall, it was an interesting mix of typical porter flavors and more fruity hops. It was almost like a toned down version of Three Floyds Alpha Klaus, although not nearly as hop forward.
