Cobra (1029), In the snake pit, Maryland, USA Dec 21, 2007 750 ml green champagne bottle. Corked & capped. 2007 batch, but not marked on bottle. Medium pop released the cork. Poured out a deep reddish brown, with a sticky tan head. Aromas are of roasted malts, dark cocoa powder, slight Belgian funk. Slightly smoky, with a tinge of pipe tobacco. Flavors are of dark dried fruits, bitter cocoa, slight caramel, some funk. Medium mouthfeel, nice & thick. About time I got a decent bottle of Belgian beer. Finished somewhat dry, like eating dry cocoa powder by itself. Overall, the best Belgian I’ve had in quite awhile. Bip (4), Belgium does not count May 19, 2008 It’s dificult to found a dark beer with a good bitterness without malty or coffee aroma. There is the Equinox. DuffMan (1915), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Jul 25, 2007 Bottle purchased at The Alembic where it was brought to the table in the fashion of a fine wine, presented and poured by our server accordingly (this is how all fine beer should be treated!). Murky (almost opaque) brown with a brief tan head. Musty basement, mushroom, and chocolate aroma-- COOL! Musty cobwebby palate, some dark bitter chocolate and figgy fruit. Fine champagne-like carbonation with a dry finish. A real treat. KnutAlbert (2165), Oslo, Norway Dec 21, 2007 Bottle, Pig’s Ear 2007.
Packed with flavour, sweet, sour, fruity, a Belgian at its best. Fine lingering finish. DaSilky1 (1591), San Diego, California, USA Dec 26, 2007 Not a bad looking bottle..corked and capped. The beer pours out a dark muddy garnet color settling darker in the glass and giving way to healthy and tightly woven tan head. The aroma is dusty, eucalyptus-like, and nutty with notes of coriander and/or cardamom . Flavors of rhubarb and bitter melon, followed by a bit of charred barley and grapefruit rind. Mouthfeel grows fuller at warmer temperatures. Definitely bitter. Definitely strong. Ending is dry as a bone. Belgian yeast takes a backseat for more western styled boldness. Quite nice.
