A wheat beer from the good old days.
Erdinger Weissbier ’dark’ is a rich and smooth wheat beer specialty from Erdinger Weissbräu. It owes its full-bodied flavor to the fine hops and dark malt used in its production.
The dark beer specialty is brewed according to an age-old recipe. Its spicy flavor also results from the increased proportion (about 13%) of original wort. Nonetheless, at 5.3%, it doesn’t contain much more alcohol than Erdinger Weissbier ’with fine yeast’.

Bottle, 500ml. Pours a deep copper/brown with a frothy brown head with good retention and mild lacing. Malty, earthy aroma, with hints of roasted caramel, straw, citrus zest, raisins and bready yeasts. Medium to light bodied, with high, fizzy carbonation. Quite watery in the end, with an abrupt, paper finish and some saltiness from all the carbonation.

Bottle, 500ml. A copper reddish beer with a big foamy head. Aroma is of dry fruits, roasted malt, alcohol and maybe a hint of caramel. Taste is bitter and well-balanced. This beer is heavy on carbonation and with some astringency. Not very dense, yet taste doesn´t fade away.

Deep brown and cloudy with a light white head. Earthy aroma, and taste with hints of fruit, malts and caramel. Effervescent on the tongue. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Surprisingly, I like dunkels best of all the traditional German beers. This was lovely on draft with a mellow nutty flavor and it goes down so easy. Wonderful and mellow.

Cloudy brown color with tones of red, rapidly fading beige head with large bubbles. Malty, fruity nose, lightly roasted, sour notes. Roasted malt taste, hints of caramel and earthy hops. Medium body, lively carbonation, watery texture. Not my favorite style.

Beautiful, dark brown, clear body with a head that is just slightly off white. The banana and clove notes that are expected are accompanied by some caramel and toast notes. The flavor is slightly sweet from the darker malts with the caramel providing a nice base for the yeast esters. Would like a touch more carbonation on this one or a more lively mouth feel. Finishes a little sweet with the caramel from the malt shinning through.

I’ve had this beer a few times before, but I can’t think of a better place in the world to rate this aside from Hong Kong. Aroma of raisins, roasted malt, prunes and tonnes of caramel. Medium-bodied; Strong rich caramel flavour at first with a lot of prune and raisin flavour coupled with some dry malt and a bit of bitterness from the roasted malt at the finish. Aftertaste shows a solid sweet flavour with a good amount of roasted malt and even more caramel and prunes to balance out the maltiness. Overall, a nice dunkles with a solid profile and a rich caramel sweetness. I sampled this 50 cL bottle purchased at Flavour in the United Centre in Admirality, Hong Kong on 21-June-2014 for HK$15,80 sampled in my hotel room here in Wan Chai, Hong Kong on 22-June-2014.
