A wheat beer from the good old days.
Erdinger Weissbier ’dark’ is a rich and smooth wheat beer specialty from Erdinger Weissbräu. It owes its full-bodied flavor to the fine hops and dark malt used in its production.
The dark beer specialty is brewed according to an age-old recipe. Its spicy flavor also results from the increased proportion (about 13%) of original wort. Nonetheless, at 5.3%, it doesn’t contain much more alcohol than Erdinger Weissbier ’with fine yeast’.

Hazy dark brown with huge beige head. Not much aroma, but some sweet vanilla and cinnamon notes. For a weissbier there is little of the usual banana and clove taste. Some sweetish roasted malt flavours. Could be good with a rich meal of German-style roasted pork, but a little bland when drunk without food. A slightly disappointing beer.

Dark brown body and a medium head that dissipated quite quickly for a weizen beer. Aroma of roasted malts and plum. Easy to drink with soft carbonation. I can’t really taste the weizen in this, only dunkel. And there is the whole problem. I just can’t see how is this considered a (dunkel)weizen if there are no signature banana/spice/clove notes. I’m trying hard, but I shouldn’t be, especially because Erdinger is considered to be the flagship of the style, at least in the eyes of the media. Maybe I’d overlook this and call this a decent dunkel if it was named differently, but it wasn’t supposed to be.

Bottle pour. Pours a near black color with a foamy head. Sweeter candy malt aroma. Sweet flavor with a gra p e flavor like background. Not quite what I expected but good either way. Enjoyable beer

Cola colored, with a light beige head. Smells like pumpernickel bread, maybe a touch more sweetness. Taste is toasty, a bit of rye, and some more light sweetness in the finish.

From bottle in Xiamen, China. Pours a very dark brown, almost black, with a big tan head that dissipates quickly leaving no lacing to speak of. Aroma of caramel and biscuit. Taste is caramel, biscuit, very lightly sweet and almost no hoppy bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and good carbonation. Slightly sweet, slightly bitter finish.

500ml bottle. Pours dark brown with a big beige head that disappears pretty quickly. Darker than your standard dunkelweizen. Aroma of caramel malts, very slight hint of banana. Tastes of roastiness, some coffee, doesn’t have the usual fruitiness that I have come to expect from dunkelweizens. Slight sourness. it is unusual for the style in my opinion.
