COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned.
Ingredients: Water; wheat malt; barley malt; roasted malt; hops; yeast.
Name changed from Erdinger Weissbier Dunkel to Erdinger Dunkel, and abv changed from 5.6% to 5.3% by 2012.
A wheat beer from the good old days.
Erdinger Weissbier ’dark’ is a rich and smooth wheat beer specialty from Erdinger Weissbräu. It owes its full-bodied flavor to the fine hops and dark malt used in its production.
The dark beer specialty is brewed according to an age-old recipe. Its spicy flavor also results from the increased proportion (about 13%) of original wort. Nonetheless, at 5.3%, it doesn’t contain much more alcohol than Erdinger Weissbier ’with fine yeast’.

A Mes rate: Black and opaque with a large tan head that lasts well. Great looks all round. Standard mouthfeel, a little too much carb me-thinks. Heavy malt and yeasty flavour, not as creamy as it looks but ok. Much better than the white and I would have it again.

Pours with a fantastic large head of foam. Otherwise this is a refreshing dunkle weisse with a light malty flavour. Perhaps too light and thin on the palate.

creamy. Easy drink but not one that distinguished itself. Some aroma there including cocoa. Bit of different flavours, including nuts but altogether on the thin mouthfeel side. Roast and also a tad burnt wheat. Malty more than anything.

Dark brown with a big beige head. Aroma is caramel, wheaty, banana and yeasty. Flavor is medium sweet. Soft and smooth with a sweet finish. 200210

UPDATED: NOV 20, 2004 Oily plantanes lie beneath heavy earthy malts and herbal tea leaves...Creamy cloves and strong roasty malt simplicity...Mundanity restrains it seems...

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a strong, creamy, off white head. Nose of lightly roasted and sweet dark malts. Pleasant flavor of sweet malts with some copper/metal and mild wheat. Medium in body and very smooth. Not bad.

A: The pour is a dark mahogany color with some red/amber notes and a fizzy off-white head. S: The nose is quite yeasty with lots of spice esters (particularly clove). A fair amount of sweet dark fruits and a mild cola characteristic. T: This starts off somewhat mild with trace amounts of banana and spicy esters. There are some notes of roasted malts and there’s a high level of (carbonic) acidity which does not appeal to me. M: Very highly carbonated with a medium body. The carbonation and acidity from the carbonation that is present in the flavor gives this a bit of a soda water feel. D: I found this one to be disappointing. I don’t know if the bottle was old or what, but the flavor was really not very good.

The label matches, bugt I have a few more Erdinger beers up my sleeve (and a few more German women, also). This one pours turbid burny umber with medium, uniform, off-white head. Aroma of hopcit, toffee, brown sugar, figs, sour mash poontang. Tastes roasty malty, with shades of caramel, almonds, figs, brown sugar. Medium to light palate, with a moderate complexity and balance. This one is a definite repeater, but not one that jumos out at me and demands a repeat buy.

500 mL bottle from the Barracks Road Teeter in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a hazy brown color with a medium head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma is nondescript and malty with very faint banana bread. Taste is toffeeish malts, banana, bread, slight spice. Medium bodied.

Draft at BeerBistro. Dark brown body with a big creamy beige head and solid lacing. Mild malt aroma, with notes of light toasty caramel. Similar flavour of sweet caramel malt with dry toasty finish and aftertaste. (6+). More dunkel than weiss. Average palate. Pleasant but less Aventinus like than I had hoped.
