A wheat beer from the good old days.
Erdinger Weissbier ’dark’ is a rich and smooth wheat beer specialty from Erdinger Weissbräu. It owes its full-bodied flavor to the fine hops and dark malt used in its production.
The dark beer specialty is brewed according to an age-old recipe. Its spicy flavor also results from the increased proportion (about 13%) of original wort. Nonetheless, at 5.3%, it doesn’t contain much more alcohol than Erdinger Weissbier ’with fine yeast’.

On the finish a lovely dunkel...the nose is too wort-ish for my taste. Toffee, I think not coffee as others have commented. All in all a lively beer on a coolish summer night hearkening to the coming Oktoberfest beers of September... a nice gateway drug

I’d start this review by admitting that I am very partial to this beer. This beer is a standard dunkel, but that’s not all there is to it. It is the standard by which all other dunkels should be measured by. Alright, let’s get started with the beer - the aroma is sweet and malty, not too hoppy, as every good dunkel is. There is lots of chocolate and caramel coming through the beer. This beer just reeks of caramel - but in a good way. Every time I drink this beer, there is banana on the palate, just on the edges of the tongue, tempting you to drink more to intensify the banana note. The hops give it a very pleasant herbal feel to round off the cloying rich mouthfeel of this excellent beer. I cannot detect any cereals or grains, but the head is very biscuity in aroma and it very pleasantly malty. The umami flavors dominate this beer just as they round it off - as I said before, it is a very very rich beer, but still very friendly and approachable. I mean, who doesn’t like chocolates, toffee, and bananas? The finish is what lets this beer down. Even though the finish is nice and long, there is a metallic note always ringing through the finish. A most disappointing end to an otherwise wonderful beer. Try to stave off the unpleasant note to the finish by taking one more long swig. You won’t regret it. I promise.

Nice muddy brown body, with slight reddish edging. Ever so slightly off-white head that almost disappears within a couple of minutes. Aromas and tastes are wheat, banana, brown sugar, and red fruits on the finish. I prefer this to their regular Weisbier as it is more aromatic, flavourful and complex.

From a bottle at a club. First poured by barman was too lively and was 5 x the head vs liquid. Repoured with another and got it right. Temperature was too cold though so aroma, flavour and palate all somewhat subdued initially. Allowed to settle and warm to room temp and much stronger all round. Good dunkel with solid malty flavours. Lacing lasted reasonably well. Good depiction of the style and quite enjoyable.

500ml bottle from Tesco. Bubbly tan head disappears quickly, no lacing. Body is murky dark brown. Malty nose, bread, hint of spice. Flavour is biscuity malt, charcoal, spicy hop finish. Yeasty aftertaste. High carbonation, small gentle bubbles, mouthfeel is a bit thin. Nothing to write home about.

500 ml bottle. Cloudy brown color topped by a creamy taupe head. Yeasty wheat malt aroma has notes of butterscotch and plumbs. Sweet wheat malt flavor has caramel notes. Some spicy hops in finish.

Carbonatação extremamente alta, destoa completamente do estilo. O corpo também é fraco. Parece uma Coca Cola.

Bottle from Tesco, Gilesgate, Durham. Pours very dark brown with bubbly and diminishing off-white head and lively carbonation so it looks like cola. The classic sweet wheat beer nose is present as well as hints of cocoa and coffee, making the overall aroma bitter and darkly pleasant. Chocolate and coffee again front up the flavour, with a mild lagerish hop to it. There’s a gassy and fizzy mouthfeel and a rather astringent finish. Pretty good stuff.

Bottle at home. Pours a dark turbid brown with a large rocky head which is slightly off-white. Aroma: yeasty, bready, malty and with some fruit (fig?). Taste is slightly sweet with a gently dry and bitter finish. On the palate, more malt and dark fruits, yeast and molasses. Body is quite thin and highly carbonated. Not bad.
