02-Nov-05 (330 ml bottle: Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA) Okay, so here’s a bottle of Oktoberfest Weizen I know is reasonably fresh and has been taken care of. Also, having April 2006 is a big hint as well. <wink> It pours a bubbly, off-white, inch-tall head that will have subsided considerably before I’m ready to taste it. Cloudy, orange-amber in color, with the final few yeast-laden drops slowly mixing in with the rest of the beer in my pint glass. The nose seems somewhat caramely and sweet, which I guess makes sense since this weizen is made for Oktoberfest, but it’s really not very aromatic at all, and lacks the full-on maltiness of good German Oktoberfests, but also lacks the traditional aromas of a good German wheat beer. I’m also a little disappointed by the flavor, which also shows a bit of sweet caramel and wheat, but also the unexpected flavor of apples. Actually, looking back at that other bottle I rated a few months ago, I got apples then too, so I guess this is just part of the flavor profile. It doesn’t taste bad, but rather just kind of light and boring, perhaps trying to be hit both styles, but missing the mark on both. Body is medium I suppose, but it’s not very convincing. Carbonation is fine, and the mouthfeel holds consistently through to the finish. There is no lacing on the glass, but at least the head has shown good retention, holding a thin layer for the entire session. Oh well, at least I can put this beer to rest since I’ve had a fresh sample, and I’m still not terribly enthused by it.

10-Sep-05 (500 ml bottle: Windy City in El Cajon, CA) A Hefeweizen that is "Brewed for Oktoberfest," so says the label, and the chick on the label looks like Marilyn Monroe. Okay, so this is a different type of Oktoberfest beer, but I’m worried that this beer sat at Windy City for a year or longer. While the best by date isn’t notched, the most recent year is 2003. The flavor is sweet, grainy, malty and mildly bitter, but I think the flavor I’m really noticing here is apple. Yes, apple. In fact, apple is pretty strong in the aroma as well, with some graininess in the background. Medium bodied, but feels kind of dead and tired on the palate. Medium golden orange in color and fully cloudy. The whitish head is bubbly and very short-lived, fading to nothing in no time. Not caring too much for the Erdinger beers up to this point, but if I ever see this again, I’ll give it another shot.

Originally reviewed: 10/27/09. Bottle poured into my weizen glass. Pours a very murky dark gold with a good-sized off-white head on top. Decent retention. Leaves little lace. Smells of bananas, yeast, and a big bubble gum scent. Very sweet smelling. The mouth is creamy smooth, but with enough carbonation to give a good balance of crispness. This is a really nice mellow hefe. Very smooth bready flavors, with a semi-sweet slightly tart finish. This is a nice change from the usual fall offerings. Refreshing, smooth, pleasant. Get some.

Taken at a local pubs Ocotberfest during Oct 2011: sadly not in the correct glassware, £2.00 for a half pint in a standard unbadged UK half sleeve. Cloudy, murky, you choose! It’s lemon gold in colour with a good white crown on top, just like almost all wiessbiers. Bananas and cloves with a vanilla overtone, in both the smell and taste: yummy. I couldn’t tell any difference to the regular Erdinger to be honest, the advertised 5.7% ABV certainly didn’t feature greatly in the taste but I did knock a glass over in the next pub I visited, so maybe it was stronger than I thought. Serving type: on-tap

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Hazy golden yellow colour, big foamy head. Not as cloudy as most wheat beers. Mild spicy banana aroma & flavour. Fizzy but flat aftertaste. A ’light’ Hefe.
