COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Lovers of strong beer need not worry that ERDINGER Weissbier Pikantus 'dark bock beer' is going to be too sweet, as is the case with so many bock beers. Despite the higher alcohol content, the Erding brew masters have succeeded in retaining the special Pikantus taste.

500ml bottle, best before end date 06-2005. Dark mahogany beer with a big tan head that soon dissipates. Aroma of sweet dark fruits and dark malts. Flavor is less sweet than the aroma. Starts out mildly sweet, and dries out at the finish of each sip. Spicy and complex with a full range of dark fruits and malts, and just a hint of tartness. Alcohol is noticeable but well covered by the flavors, and not boozy or distracting. Thick, full body. This is no Aventinus, but nonetheless an excellent weizen bock. $3.29 at Broudys, Orange Park FL.

50 cl bottle. Yeast in bottom. Brown colour with a great white head. Complex aroma of yeast, roasted barley, sweetness and wheat. Great complex taste, that ends up with a warm feeling. A great wiezen bock.

interesting complex aroma, walnuts, malt, wheat and a little bit of yeast. Very much like an ale. There is quite much lacking, flat palate and a wierd finish. Interesting to sample, but nothing I would buy again

(500 ml bottle: $2.49 at Windy City in El Cajon, CA) Wow, the nose is extremely aromatic and complex. Iím getting strong, dark malts, brown sugar, molasses, spices, raisins and other dark fruits, alcohol, and much more. I keep trying to identify more aromas and after that mild hyperventilation, Iím getting dizzy, so that will have to do. The flavor isnít a rich as the nose indicates, but itís plenty tasty. Lots of wheat and esters, sweet rich malt, dark fruits, and molasses, plus itís fairly noticeably alcoholic, but not boozy. It seems to taste a slight bit oxidized, and I guess thatís not surprising since I didnít buy this beer at the most reputable of liquor stores around here, and the "best by" date on the bottle reads Oct, 2004. Fairly thick and syrupy, the sticky sweetness is unchecked by other flavors or the medium carbonation levels and seriously cloys the palate. I usually love sticky, sweet beers, but I think this is bordering on too cloying even for me. Very dark ruddy brown in color and only slightly translucent through the center of my pint glass. When pouring the beer, the tan head is very fizzy and dissipates almost as quickly and frantically as Coca Cola. But Iíll tell you, for a beer thatís a year out of date, this is one damn fine beer. Of course, this is a style of beer I really love, but itís done very well here. And despite the sticky sweetness, Iíve managed to finish this entire bottle and I have no more bottles left. Oh darn, I guess that means I have to go buy more!

larsga (6139) - Oslo, NORWAY - SEP 17, 2005
Fine offwhite head over black-orange opaque body. Aroma is faint, but sweetly spicy and malty. Big, sweet toffee-like taste, yet smooth, with some spiciness and complexity. Lingers and settles in the mouth as it fades. Taste grows stronger as you drink more. (0.5l bottle, served Norwegian fashion, which means too cold and without all the yeast.)

Bottled. Poured a dark, dakr red with loads of bown head. Fruity, alcoholic taste and aroma, but a little muted overall in flavour - could use a little more complexity. Silky smooth though, with a really bready flavour in place of the stronger fruit tastes I was expecting. Pretty good, overall.

FOAMer (45) - Bartlesville, Oklahoma, USA - SEP 12, 2005
Pours garnet/deep ruby with a large off-white head. Aromas of clove and roasted grains are evident as well a dark fruits. Alcohol aromas are evedint as beer warms. No hop aromas are eveident. Flavors upfront are of dried fruits and bready malt. Roasted Grains are evident in the taste. The beer finishes with a noticable malt sweetness and melanoidins. Very tastey. A nice beer to sit by the fire and enjoy a book.
