COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Lovers of strong beer need not worry that ERDINGER Weissbier Pikantus 'dark bock beer' is going to be too sweet, as is the case with so many bock beers. Despite the higher alcohol content, the Erding brew masters have succeeded in retaining the special Pikantus taste.

Dark body, blackish, yet thin looking. Head is toasted white bread and long-lasting, thick head. Smells of robust hops, polite chocolate malt. Taste is large, sweet medium-thick palate. Carbonated, toffee, caramel, a little bitterness to go with sweetness, grapes, agridulce as they say in Spanish. Wonderful roasted malt characteristics and lingering froth, well-made beer. Purchased at Supermercado Haas in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

500ml bottle in an Erdinger World Cup glass at Blå Rock Cafe in Tromsø while watching France vs Portugal on TV. Cloudy, reddish brown in colour topped with a small, but lasting brownish head. Aroma of wheat and dark chocolate. The flavour combines lots of sweet, roasted malts with an yeasty backbone. Medium bodied and dry mouthfeel. A bit too carbonated. OK.

Great dark brown colour with thick beige head. The aromas are limited,, mostly a caramel tone. It has low carbonation with good creamy texture. The taste is caramel that is roasted, lending some bitterness from that.

Pours a murky brown. Very fizzy and not very palatable for me. Give me a Weizen or give me a Bock, but don’t mix them, dagnabbit!

Bottle. Smooth dark brown pour, with great tan head. Not-too-sweet flavour with a lovely creamy texture. Buy me again!

Pours hazy rootbeer brown with a massive tan head that refuses to dissipate. Aroma is yeasty, malty, and nutty with hints of brown sugar and cloves. Very good flavor - excellent balance. While it’s not very complex, I’m glad it’s not overpoweringly sweet like most dark bocks. There is just the right amount of malt sugars to balance the hops. There is a nice dry finish with only slight bitterness. The mouthfeel isn’t great however - there is a thin, oily texture. But overall, this is a good beer - not great, but it is very smooth, and has a good "traditional" weizen bock flavor.

UPDATED: NOV 10, 2014 Bottle. Muddy chocolate brown pour, lively, with a creamy yellow-tan lacy head. Sweet smell, wheat and yeast, cloves, maybe some kandis, orange peels and grape, spice, hint of alcohol. Tastes yeasty, wheaty, bockily vinous, and medium spicy. Feels smooth, creamy, and a bit oily, warming from the mild alcohol but nothing harsh. Medium-dry finish. Overall, a mild but flavor-packed synthesis, a successful fusion of two (or three) distinct styles. Erdinger does use a bit of its “magic” to dull this – it could have been much sharper – but there’s no point in complaining – they’ve finally given us a good one! [2006.06.20: 4.2]

Have had about a dozen bottles over the years, but here’s a fresh one in the States. Soapier, oilier appearance than I remember from two years ago, with a little more red berry on top of the above. Still has interesting vinous character and strangely complex fruitiness that seems to be hard to find elsewhere -- lots of interesting esters and yeast metabolites, flashes of lots of different kinds of candy. A bit airy, medium body, malt a bit flat and the wheat isn’t really given a chance to shine, and the alcohol seeps and singes despite the sudden flatness, but this really, really hits the sweet spot for me as the third beer of the evening, just enough for the sweet-tooth but dry enough to continue things along smoothly. Still the best in the brewery’s portfolio, meiner Meinung nach, und immer noch empfehlenswert. [2014.11.10: 3.9]

Pours a very dark brown... foamy head that lingers for awhile... chocolatey, malty, nutty flavors... amazing. Very easy to forget that this beer is 7.2%abv. One of the best strong beers I’ve had in a long time.

"Poured a dark brown color with large foamy head. Aroma was of caramel cloves malts some chocolate even to it. Flavor is much the same not as sweet as some other Weizenbocks. Good beer."
