COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Lovers of strong beer need not worry that ERDINGER Weissbier Pikantus 'dark bock beer' is going to be too sweet, as is the case with so many bock beers. Despite the higher alcohol content, the Erding brew masters have succeeded in retaining the special Pikantus taste.

Source:500 mL bottle from Liquor Barn.
Glass:Pilsener Urquell glass.
Appearance:To describe this beer as muddy looking doesn’t do mud very much justice. This is the ruddiest looking brown color I’ve ever seen...I LIKE IT.
Aroma:Dark fruits, cloves and some earthy hops dominate the nose.
Flavor:Flavor is a little mellow. Some dark fruits, caramel and chocolate are all present, but in muted amounts.
Palate:Medium bodied with solid carbonation.
Overall:Very good beer, but it doesn’t quite hang with Aventinus and the likes in depth of flavor, and overall amount of flavor. Still, very well done.

UPDATED: AUG 19, 2015 0.5 l bottle from Drankenservice Françoise, best before 8/2015. Murky, dark reddish brown with a medium large, frothy, slowly diminishing, tan head. Fruity-malty aroma of ripe banana, strawberry jam, dark cherries, wine gum and plums. Sweetish, fruity-malty taste of dark cherries, plums, strawberry jam, ripe banana, cinnamon and candy sugar, followed by sourish, minimally bitter, even slightly alcoholic finish with notes of port. Medium to full body, slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. The bottle is already rather old but maybe the beer benefitted from that. The slight port notes and the soft carbonation make this beer quite smooth but it us somehow almost too heavy to drink. Maybe a tad too sweet and not sophisticated enough but still good.

This weizenbock is traditionally Deutsch. No discernible hop character but definitely imperial in Bavarian bock malt. Every molecule is imparted with distinct flavors of the Bavarian weizen yeast strains. I have always held these high Gravity weizens sacred. Similar in some ways to Belgian ales due to the characteristic nature of the weizen ale yeast strains, these ale style have flavors reminiscent of each other. However, this bier has a tremendous dark malt character. Ther is nothing in the wild ester flavor department characterized by warm fermentation temperatures. A true German bock weizen brewed with ample Bavarian malts to a rather intoxicating gravity and ethanol content. Heavenly.

Pours a dark, reddish amber with a foamy tan head. Aroma of wheat, molasses, raisins. Taste is very rich, malt forward, sweet, and slightly earthy. Full bodied, thick texture, fizzy carbonation with a lingering, yeasty finish. Pleasant and easy to drink, but lacking depth of flavour.

500ml Bottle - Dark brown with some red tinges. Raisins, marzipan and fruitcake in the aroma. Fruity, rich and vinous taste with raisins, blackcurrant and marzipan standing out.

Aroma is roasty grains, caramel, toffee, banana esters and yeast. Taste is sweet wheat, clove, dark fruit, candy sugar and light tart . Very well balanced start to finish. Appearance is a hazy amber with a thin pearl head that retains fairly well.

Pours a dark brown color, covered by a decent beige colored head. Average retention. Aroma is wheaty, some caramel presence and spices. Taste starts slightly sweet and wheaty, some caramel and spices in the finish. Slight presence of alcohol, but not off-putting. Decent brew.

500ml brown bottle from Erdinger mixed pack. Cloudy brown with orange highlights. Head is medium with a tight bead and beige in colour. Aromas of wheat, yeast, spice, caramel, light banana. Taste has wheat, caramel, touch of metallic hops. Malty finish with light alcohol showing through. Medium bodied, fine carbonation. Decent enough, but not really exciting. Wanted to like this a bit more...
