ERDINGER Urweisse – in good old Bavarian tradition
A cause for celebration among weissbier fans!
A particularly strong, spicy aroma, a distinctive yeast flavor and an unmistakable top-fermenting beer profile - these are the characteristics of ERDINGER’s new family member in good old Bavarian tradition. The recipe for Urweisse dates back to the brewery’s founding days over 120 years ago. It owes its distinctive, traditional weissbier flavor to a special malt, a different hop variety and a special yeast.
And as appearance is just as important, Urweisse has been given its own special look - which will especially please all friends of the "good old Bavarian tradition". The label features the historic "Beautiful Tower" of Erding. The Euro bottle and original glass awake memories of days gone by. The new crate is also particularly eye-catching with its historic wooden look and "scorched" lettering.
Best is to simply taste it for yourself! ERDINGER Urweisse is available in Bavaria from January 1, 2008 and from February 1 in Baden-Württemberg. Presentation cartons are available in the ERDINGER Fan Shop from January onward.

Nettes Weizen! 13/11/11/11/12/11

500ml bottle. Hazy orange in colour with a billowy, off-white head. Caramel aroma with some fruit and a spicy edge. Sweetish flavour with some grains, more fruit and a dryish finish. Good.

Slight hazy orange pour, medium off white head. Aroma of citrus, spices, herbs and some fruit. Flavour has a medium bitterness of hops, quite fresh, with subtle sweet fruity smoothness. Nice simple hefe. ^ this is my regular weisse rate. It is more hoppy than that. Which is a very god thing. +.3

Bottle. Dark orange with brown tones, hazy, big big white head. Smells of citrus, wheat malts, yeast and hints of banana. Taste is quite sweet and malty with more banana than in the aroma. Also some citrus acids in there. Very refreshing too. Finish is kind of bitter. Not much, but more than the normal german weiss.

0.5l bottle. Pours a hazy murky orange body with lots of big white floaters and a gigantic everlasting fluffy and off-white head. Dang that’s some solid sediments! Almost looks like someone has gone bananas and put lots of big breadcrumbs in the bottle. Aroma is somewhat low, but nice with notes of ripe banana, sweet caramel and dark malts. Medium bodied, oily texture and carbonation is soft to medium. Nice and malty - almost like a dunkel with notes of cloves. Ends with a light acidic finish and is leaving a solid malty and bready aftertaste. Nice, but more like a dunkel if you ask me.

Home 20110508 (50 cl bottle): Cloudy beer with a yellow/orange-like colur and a big white head. Aroma: malty/wheat; some fruit (banana, apple); slightly yeast and a little spicy (looks-like coriander). Taste: slightly sweet, wheat, nice fruity (banana, esters) and a little bitter. Good lively carbonation for a weiss beer. In the aftertaste still some sweetness (slightly sticky) and a nice bitterness. A good combination of sweet, bitter and fruitness.

Cloudy orange/straw colored pour. Big white head that subsides fairly quickly and leave little to no lacing behind. There is a not-quite-ripe banana aroma to this one, or rotten fruit smell. But it is certainly not the banana that is typical in a decent hefe. But this is an urweisse. A slight aroma of bread as well. Yeast makes its way in there. The taste is almost as similar. It has a nutty, fruity, banana taste. Really quite unique in that I have never experienced this flavor in a regular weisse beer. Especially not hefe. The mouthfeel is the most lacking in this beer. It starts with a bite on the tip of the tongue from the carbonation. From there it lays down a marginal amount of sweetness over the rest of the taste muscle. But there is a huge bitterness in the back that gets very annoying.

1 May 2011, bottle. orange yellow, hazy, some sediment and a frothy white head. nose is a yeasty wheat beer; faint banana, perhaps some coriander, but i think the yeast is dominant with a kind of mix b/t yeast and bananas. med body yet crisp and refreshing. moderately fizzy. taste has much more banana but not as much as some. there is a faint spiciness as well.
