ERDINGER Urweisse – in good old Bavarian tradition
A cause for celebration among weissbier fans!
A particularly strong, spicy aroma, a distinctive yeast flavor and an unmistakable top-fermenting beer profile - these are the characteristics of ERDINGER’s new family member in good old Bavarian tradition. The recipe for Urweisse dates back to the brewery’s founding days over 120 years ago. It owes its distinctive, traditional weissbier flavor to a special malt, a different hop variety and a special yeast.
And as appearance is just as important, Urweisse has been given its own special look - which will especially please all friends of the "good old Bavarian tradition". The label features the historic "Beautiful Tower" of Erding. The Euro bottle and original glass awake memories of days gone by. The new crate is also particularly eye-catching with its historic wooden look and "scorched" lettering.
Best is to simply taste it for yourself! ERDINGER Urweisse is available in Bavaria from January 1, 2008 and from February 1 in Baden-Württemberg. Presentation cartons are available in the ERDINGER Fan Shop from January onward.

Tasting from September 2011.
Into a weissbier glass it is typically effervescent and races a head up the sides. Solid, satiny plume settles a good inch out the brim and more head than beer. just off-white in colour, well retained and messy as it ebbs. Murky, muddy, auburn amber body with a bad case of the floaties. Assertively phenolic, hefty clove, rubber band, a touch of ash, amid sweet, caramelised banoffee pie dessert is the intriguing, enticing aroma. First sip sees a noticeable higher alcohol (?), warming and medicinal. Good lot of clove like the aroma, light citrus sweetness, lime and lemon zest. Biscuity, nutty is the malt, a hint of vanilla icecream and nutmeg in late and in the linger, flavour is rounded and controlled. A good lot of yeast in there, the banana of the nose subdued on the palate. Very light bodied, spritzy upfront before smoothing out. Shows good length. Simple, but pleasing ale. Nerpůhledná nahnědlá barva, chuť po žvýkačce, lehce vajíčkách, banánu a citrónu, jedno z nejlepších pšeničných piv, co jsem kdy pil .

On tap. Dark-orange/amber coloured with a medium creamy head. Intensive smell of banana and herbs. Tastes a lot like banana and yeast, a bit clove, a bit spices and other fruits. Full body, lively carbonization.

Flaske 0,5l fra Vinmonopolet, bestillingsutvalget. Gylden. Litt uklar. Veldig høyt kremaktig skum som varer lenge. Forsiktig sitrusaroma. Smaken er i samme gate. Litt sitrus med en undertone av gjær. Passelig med kullsyre og passelig søt. UK - men ikke mer.

Taster at North Bar, Leeds. Pours a pale yellow, couple of fingers of bubble head. Aroma is classic Weiss beer - apricot/banana, wheat. Quite pungent, almost unpleasantly so. Taste is similar - solid but unspectacular. Thin mouthfeel, a bit overcarbonated too (though this dies afterward, leaving a rather dead mouthfeel). Not great.

This Urweisse offers a bit more depth in the aroma than the normal Hefeweizen by Erdinger. I believ it’s slightly more yeasty and has a slight hint of nuts. Highly enjoyable!

500ml bottle from Vinmonopolet bestillingsutvalget. Orange coloured body with a wheat haze. Concrete, bubbly, near-white head that lasts all the way through. Firm smell of ripe banana and wheat. Banana taste added by citrus and mild spices. Subdued fruity tartness on the swallow. Thin to medium bodied. Ok (Tromsø, 12.02.2012).
