COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned.
Ingredients: Water; wheat malt; barley malt; roasted malt; hops; yeast.
Name changed from Erdinger Weissbier Dunkel to Erdinger Dunkel, and abv changed from 5.6% to 5.3% by 2012.
A wheat beer from the good old days.
Erdinger Weissbier ’dark’ is a rich and smooth wheat beer specialty from Erdinger Weissbräu. It owes its full-bodied flavor to the fine hops and dark malt used in its production.
The dark beer specialty is brewed according to an age-old recipe. Its spicy flavor also results from the increased proportion (about 13%) of original wort. Nonetheless, at 5.3%, it doesn’t contain much more alcohol than Erdinger Weissbier ’with fine yeast’.

A little light for my tastes, but not bad overall. Minimal weight and staying power for such a dark colored beer.

500 ml bottle from the LCBO, best by date of 03/13 AROMA: Light wheat/malt aroma with a touch of clove. APPEARANCE: High, light tan meringue-like head that sticks around. Dark, opaque body - you could mistake this for a Guinness if you weren’t looking closely. TASTE: sweet with a hint of banana. Light spiciness. PALATE: fairly lively carbonation which masks some flavour, creamy texture. Dry finish.

Good wheat beer. Slightly weaker than the brighter varieties. My wheat beer should preferably not be dark.

AROMA: dough, nuts, toast, bread, bit metallic at first APPEARANCE: brown, clear, frothy TASTE: medium bitter, lightly sour, PALATE: medium body, slick feel, lively, bitter, OVERALL: ok dunkelweiss, but lacks depth of character and a bit too much on the malty side.

As with the white this one also lacks the thick creamy flavor as other germans. Watery with some iron and resin. Bottle from Mitra in Roden.

500ml bottle best before 03/2007, drank 12/2006. Poured into a Franziskaner Weissbier glass, it looked dark, heavy and tasty. Mahogany black with a two finger tanned foaming head, which slowly sank down to a thinner covering. Aroma of wheat and yeast, neither very strong, even as the bier warmed up. Thin, almost watery (for a weissbier, dunkel or otherwise), no depth or feel to the taste, the mouthfeel, very poor really, not a great example of this style in my opinion. I will not be rushing out and buying a crate of this, but if I ever see it on tap anywhere I will give it another try.
