Beer Stories
Brewery folklore tells a story about a train engineer with a passion for the taste of Railbender Ale. With every stop he made in Erie came an equal number of stops at our brewery. One extended visit to our fermenter left the engineer in a rather befuddled state of mind. On his fateful trip out of Erie that evening, his train mysteriously derailed. The engineer swears that a huge black cherry tree had fallen across the tracks as the culprit. No such tree was ever found, but the front of the locomotive was spattered with hundreds of red sports. In tribute to this folklore our expert brewers introduce Derailed Black Cherry Ale Ė brewed with fresh sweet black cherries and the finest malted barley to create a truly cherrylicious ale. Please enjoy responsibly, as we would never want you to get derailed!

body with a one finger fizzy off-hire head that fell to a wispy covering. The nose is super sweet, it smells like candy, and not in a good way. It smells so much like cherry that it just canít be natural. Just a bit of caramel malt peeking out. The flavor is just as sweet as I expected. This honestly tastes more like a black cherry soda than it does beer. Other than a little cereal grain like note on the finish, there isnít much else going on. There truly isnít much in the way of flaws to this, I think this is what they were going for, it just isnít anything that I want in a beer. Medium bodied and a bit sticky and clingy with soft fizzy carbonation. Should have just labeled this as a wine cooler or one of those crappy Tilt like ímalternativesí.†

Cakes (358) - New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 5, 2012
From the keg at the 2012 Selinsgrove Beer and Wine Festival Pours deep coppery with slight pink tinge and 1-finger head that forms great lace. Nose is fresh black cherry, not artificial at all, with a solid malt bill. Tastes malty, with the black cherry in the background, on the sweet side. Has kind of a bitter after taste. This is a solid fruit beer. Very distinct and bold.

Bottle at the Nook. Pours copper with a small, beige head. The aroma is distinctly black cherries, with notes of brown sugar, and saaz hops. The flavor is acidic sweetness, and mild bitterness. The palate is medium, crisp and clean. Overall, this is a surprisingly delicious fruity cream ale, with distinct fruit aroma without the typical cough syrup flavor. Well done.

Dark fruit flavor of cherry with a bit of malt. Not too sweet, but a bit tart. Aftertaste is meh.

Murky light amber with hues of pink and a foamy head. Aromas of artificial but decent cherry, light bread, and sour hops. Flavors chemically. The cherry flavor doesnt taste much at all like even artificial cherry. Other flavor of yeast. Slightly sour and slightly sweet.

355ml bottle pours a golden color with a small white head that leaves only a few spots of lacing. Aroma is mild cherry with some cereal grains. Taste is tart cherry which is the highlight and follows with some grainy malts and mild hops. Light bodied with some moderate carbonation. Just an average fruit beer at best, nothing special.

Hmm. I donít like this very much. Erie what have you done! This is quite weird! Why does it only taste okay? It is very sweet at first, but not in a good way. It mellows out a bit, but still is a bit off. I donít like the cherry flavoring.

Bottled. Poured clear, bright lighter golden with a short, well-retained white head. The aroma picked up cherry skins plus some sort of tropical fruity acidity over pale and lightly bready malts.. something wasnít quite right. The flavor found tart fruit skins upfront, with pale malts at the core.. odd, nondescript sourness around.. finished with more dry sourness and Aspartame. Light-bodied with scratchy carbonation on the palate.. OK feel overall.. not a good beer.
