Beer Stories
Brewery folklore tells a story about a train engineer with a passion for the taste of Railbender Ale. With every stop he made in Erie came an equal number of stops at our brewery. One extended visit to our fermenter left the engineer in a rather befuddled state of mind. On his fateful trip out of Erie that evening, his train mysteriously derailed. The engineer swears that a huge black cherry tree had fallen across the tracks as the culprit. No such tree was ever found, but the front of the locomotive was spattered with hundreds of red sports. In tribute to this folklore our expert brewers introduce Derailed Black Cherry Ale – brewed with fresh sweet black cherries and the finest malted barley to create a truly cherrylicious ale. Please enjoy responsibly, as we would never want you to get derailed!

Poured from an undated 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Appearance: slightly hazy pale copper with a faint reddish tint. The small white head dissipates rather rapidly leaving just a ring and decent lacing. Smell: light, sweet malt aroma with a subtle cherry character that seems more natural than artificial. Taste: light malt flavor with a fair bit of sweetness. The cherry is less subtle, and more tart (thankfully) than anticipated from the nose. Mouthfeel: medium-light body; medium carbonation; smooth Overall: a decent cherry ale; just don’t expect a lambic or kriek.

Interesting but not much special. Nice aroma and aftertaste of cherries and dark indeed in shape entirely.

(bottle - 12 oz) Clear gold color with a fizzy white head and some sediment. Aroma is stale black cherries mixed with some rye and some candied sugar. Flavor is very tasty. Lots of black cherry notes come through but sadly disappear quite quickly. Leaves a slightly dry and sour aftertaste.

@ Party Town / Florence KY - Hazy medium amber, white head cover, streaks of lace. Aroma is interesting - malt with a bit of maple. Taste is routine malt that moves effortlessly (without complexity) through the palate before adding a bit of cherry in the finish. Drawback: tart cherry lingers till the very end, masking any other flavor. Reasonable, not great.

12 fl oz bottle from BOTW (Rochester), served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.

App.: Clear copper (pinkish-golden??) with a small pinkish head. Aroma: Some decent mulled cherry notes with yeasty, doughy, grain notes that create an overall impression of cherry pie. Palate: Medium body, moderate effervescence with some prickly bubbles, a little astringent. Flav.: Much like the nose, a bit more cherry, but really, this is liquid cherry pie to me; dry with minimal bitterness, a little brightness and a somewhat abrupt, nondescript finish.

Interesting.

Pours a clear honey color with a medium white head. Aroma has some light maltiness...bready...and subtle cherry notes. Flavor showcases the cherry and has some caramely malt backing to it...certainly not tart, vinous or sweet...id rather one or more of these qualities were present to make it less boring. Light silky mouthfeel and a brief mild cherry finish.

Pours a clear copper color with no head. Aroma of bread and cherry. Black cherry flavor with caramel and bread. A bit too sweet, but still decent.
