Beer Stories
Brewery folklore tells a story about a train engineer with a passion for the taste of Railbender Ale. With every stop he made in Erie came an equal number of stops at our brewery. One extended visit to our fermenter left the engineer in a rather befuddled state of mind. On his fateful trip out of Erie that evening, his train mysteriously derailed. The engineer swears that a huge black cherry tree had fallen across the tracks as the culprit. No such tree was ever found, but the front of the locomotive was spattered with hundreds of red sports. In tribute to this folklore our expert brewers introduce Derailed Black Cherry Ale – brewed with fresh sweet black cherries and the finest malted barley to create a truly cherrylicious ale. Please enjoy responsibly, as we would never want you to get derailed!

12oz bottle - shit, I thought this was the Raibender Scotch Ale. It’s a good thing I like fruit beer. pours pale gold with white head. Nose is bad fruity yogurt. very fizzy and here’s the cherry flavor. A little smoky. "I spend my days and nights deranged!!!" mildly sweet and a tad tart.

Hazy amber. Not much aroma, but slight black cherry. Sweet malty taste with cherry flavor. Medium bodied; average carbonation.

Dark fruit flavor of cherry with a bit of malt. Not too sweet, but a bit tart. Aftertaste is meh.

@ Party Town / Florence KY - Hazy medium amber, white head cover, streaks of lace. Aroma is interesting - malt with a bit of maple. Taste is routine malt that moves effortlessly (without complexity) through the palate before adding a bit of cherry in the finish. Drawback: tart cherry lingers till the very end, masking any other flavor. Reasonable, not great.

This was an interesting beer. Had it on tap and poured a nice pinkish color with a good head and lacing throughout. Aroma was overwhelming, preparing you for the sweet taste ahead. The cherry flavor was strong and overwhelming, but it was a nice beer to try. Will not be having another.

Poured from an undated 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Appearance: slightly hazy pale copper with a faint reddish tint. The small white head dissipates rather rapidly leaving just a ring and decent lacing. Smell: light, sweet malt aroma with a subtle cherry character that seems more natural than artificial. Taste: light malt flavor with a fair bit of sweetness. The cherry is less subtle, and more tart (thankfully) than anticipated from the nose. Mouthfeel: medium-light body; medium carbonation; smooth Overall: a decent cherry ale; just don’t expect a lambic or kriek.

Cloudy gold pour with a thin white head. Black cherry syrup with some sweet caramel malts with some weird pear and apple sauce notes. Flavor is similar and sweet with a bubbly mineral end.

Last beer of the night at Brian’s 30th birthday shindig. Copper colored pour with a reddish tint. Big cherry smell up front with a little caramel and some grain. Flavor is cherry with light bits of caramel and grain as well. I may not be the best judge of this beer, as outside of pie and cherries themselves, I don’t care for anything with cherry flavor. This tasted more like a soda than a beer to me though.

more of a soda than a beer, like one of those lightly flavored seltzer waters. sadly, other than the cherries and sweetness, there is nothing about this that says "beer" to me. would be nice if they had given it a little bit of a beer profile with say, oh i dont know, hops and malt? even the sam adams cherry wheat is more interesting than this. good beer to bring to a party for people who dont like beer though, like a watery lambic. oh well. still perfectly refreshing all the same. just not beer.
