Beer Stories
Brewery folklore tells a story about a train engineer with a passion for the taste of Railbender Ale. With every stop he made in Erie came an equal number of stops at our brewery. One extended visit to our fermenter left the engineer in a rather befuddled state of mind. On his fateful trip out of Erie that evening, his train mysteriously derailed. The engineer swears that a huge black cherry tree had fallen across the tracks as the culprit. No such tree was ever found, but the front of the locomotive was spattered with hundreds of red sports. In tribute to this folklore our expert brewers introduce Derailed Black Cherry Ale – brewed with fresh sweet black cherries and the finest malted barley to create a truly cherrylicious ale. Please enjoy responsibly, as we would never want you to get derailed!

Bottle. Pours a pinkish amber with a bit of a fizzy head. Aromas of tart cherries and an almost rye & wheat-like malt presence. Flavor is heavy on the cherries... black cherries with just a little bit of pie cherries thrown in to add some tartness. This beer is not a rough and tumble beer, but I kinda like it... This is a really good fruit beer.

Pours a nearly opaque honey golden amber with not much head. Aroma is malty with an overtone of cherry and just a bit of sweetness and hops. Flavor is malty, and the cherry taste tends to dominate but is not overwhelming; it is slightly sweet and slightly hoppy. Smooth and lively, it has a nice malty, hoppy, fruity finish.

i needed to tame my initial impression of this fruity sour brew with some thought about my experiences with these types of beers and the challenges that the brewer has inventing them. after a few sips i began to enjoy the genuine black cherry sour and slightly sweet taste with the yeasty and lively light malt finish in a moderate body that cleans everything up and makes you ready for another sip. for what i can tell this is a successful beer especially for the summer... enjoy one !

Bottle at the Nook. Pours copper with a small, beige head. The aroma is distinctly black cherries, with notes of brown sugar, and saaz hops. The flavor is acidic sweetness, and mild bitterness. The palate is medium, crisp and clean. Overall, this is a surprisingly delicious fruity cream ale, with distinct fruit aroma without the typical cough syrup flavor. Well done.

12 oz bottle from the sampler case. Very little cherry and lots of dryness. Bitterness lurks throughout. I’ll pass on the next one.

Pours a pinkish amber, looks a little odd, a finger or two of foam which dissapates quickly. Smell of sweet cherry is present throughout the beer, pleasant but somewhat artificial (?) Taste is a mild ale, the cherry flavor is in the aroma and very noticable overriding other flavors. Finish is very nice, clean and crisp. Overall a fun beer to try, but nothing I would get again.

On tap at Cole’s in Buffalo, NY. Drank it on recommendation of Ender from TBS. Interesting beer. Definitely fruity, a TON of cherry, and it even pours red. But it’s a thick beer, almost pulpy. Not clear and crisp like a normal fruit beer. For that, it was an interesting beer to try. Unfortunately, as with a lot of fruit beers, I can’t see myself drinking a ton of it. It was still a very cool try though.

Bottle. Pours hazy ruby with a large, fizzy ivory head, high retention with excellent lacing. Aroma is average malt (cookie, straw), light hops (herbal), and average esters (berry) with notes of cherry. Flavor is average malt (bread, cookie), light hops (herbal), and average esters (berry) with notes of cherry. Light body, low warmth and creaminess, high carbonation with a dry finish.
