Beer Stories
Brewery folklore tells a story about a train engineer with a passion for the taste of Railbender Ale. With every stop he made in Erie came an equal number of stops at our brewery. One extended visit to our fermenter left the engineer in a rather befuddled state of mind. On his fateful trip out of Erie that evening, his train mysteriously derailed. The engineer swears that a huge black cherry tree had fallen across the tracks as the culprit. No such tree was ever found, but the front of the locomotive was spattered with hundreds of red sports. In tribute to this folklore our expert brewers introduce Derailed Black Cherry Ale – brewed with fresh sweet black cherries and the finest malted barley to create a truly cherrylicious ale. Please enjoy responsibly, as we would never want you to get derailed!

Heavy carbonation - explodes as soon as opened - be careful! Nice ruby and pink tinted copper coloured body with a super thick, frothy white head and a trillion bubbles floating from the bottom are visible. Aroma of cherries, malt, cardboard, fruit, wheat and a touch of icing sugar. Medium-bodied; Super effervescent with a large amount of cherries and fruity flavours at first then fading to a sweet finish with a dose of wheat and coriander seed noticeable. Aftertaste is pleasant and relatively clean - only some minor flavours hit the end, some light sweetness and a touch of cherries. Overall, an okay beer - not horrible, but a very carbonated and decently balanced beer - not too sweet, but not showing too much character. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Liquor Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 11-July-2010, sampled at home in Washington on 07-September-2010.

Last beer of the night at Brian’s 30th birthday shindig. Copper colored pour with a reddish tint. Big cherry smell up front with a little caramel and some grain. Flavor is cherry with light bits of caramel and grain as well. I may not be the best judge of this beer, as outside of pie and cherries themselves, I don’t care for anything with cherry flavor. This tasted more like a soda than a beer to me though.

Bottle from Half Time. Pours amber with a fizzy off-white head. Aroma is sort of cooked. Malt? Fruit? Both? Med minus body. Flavor comes over to me as more chocolate than cherry at first, later it does go mild light cherry. The flavor just lacks intensity. Not a sicky sweet fruit beer, but not a flavorful one either. Sort of bland ale.

Pours a clear honey color with a medium white head. Aroma has some light maltiness...bready...and subtle cherry notes. Flavor showcases the cherry and has some caramely malt backing to it...certainly not tart, vinous or sweet...id rather one or more of these qualities were present to make it less boring. Light silky mouthfeel and a brief mild cherry finish.

12 oz bottle from Cranbury BuyRite. Poured a dull orange body with lots of rising effervescence and a smaller fizzy off white head. Aroma is grains with a touch of black ferry soda. The body is loaded with fizzy carbonation, a medium body and a touch of sourness on the initial finish which gives way to lots of sugary sweetness. Flavor is sour cherry at first that fades into black cherry with a touch of cream soda and then grains. Meh seems more gimmicky and soda like then craft.

Bottle. Hazy honey colored beer with enormous frothy head. Yikes- alot of fluffy head at first pour. Aromas of fruit, cherries, sweet and sour. Light sweetness, slight sour. Ave carbonation. Taste is cherries and some grains. Not bad.

Pours golden amber with large white head and great lacing. Aroma reminds me of my mother’s homemade cherry pie. Sour cherries with a touch of sweetness. Taste is less impressive...cherries, pears, and sour dominates. Too thin and placed on top of ordinary ale.

Reddish orange beer with a thin white head that dissipates quickly. Nose of sour cherries and yeast with a bit of citrus. Taste is sweet up front, like sugared cherry puree, with a hint of bitterness that follows. It would have been better if the sourness of the aroma were apparent in the taste, but it’s definitely much more sweet than sour. The aftertaste counterbalances a bit, but there is a distinct lack of complexity here. Drinkable, but not great.
