Beer Stories
Mad Anthony’s APA is named for General Anthony Wayne, Brigadier General of the American Revolutionary War. It is rumored that during the war, General Wayne was shot numerous times and that his “madness” can be attributed to lead poisoning caused by the lead filled bullets which entered his body. He died in 1796, and was buried in Erie only to be dug up years later by his angry son, upset that his father had not been buried in the family plot. Driving Mad Anthony’s remains back to St. David’s Churchyard, his son drove so fast, causing many of the General’s bones to fall out of the wagon and be strewn across various parts of Pennsylvania!

poured amber in color with a very small white head. A bit of hops when it hits your palate but nothing really afterwards.

Hazy tan pour, no head...I mean no head. Nose is muted citrus. Somewhat bitter. Middle is sour citrus and light bready flavor. Finish is somewhat absent. I did not finish this beer, will use for cooking.

Bottle courtesy of Braudog. Thanks Matt! Amber pour with a short white head. Aroma is rather malty and grainy with soft floral hops. Taste is floral hops, light earthy hops, soft fruit, grains and strong malt notes. Body is medium with a moderate, bubbly carbonation. Ends with more floral hops, light fruit, toasted malt notes and grains.

Transfer from BA review on 10-31-12- Poured from bottle into pint glass Appearance – Pours a lightly hazed golden color with a half finger white head. The head fades fast to give light lacing and a spotty foam on the top of the brew. Smell – The aroma is bready with some sweeter tropical fruit aromas of tangerine and mango as well as some peach smell. Overall it is bready and sweet. Quite nice. Taste – The taste begins very differently then would have been anticipated from the nose. While there is plenty of fruit aromas in the nose there are almost none in the tongue and in fact after the initial taste, which contains a light sweetness, the brew is rather dry. It begins with strong flavors of a bready nature. Soon some lighter hop flavors come to the tongue. These are largely of an earthy nature, but also contain some flavors of a herbal nature as well. These hop flavors grow stronger and more bitter as the taste advances to the end, leaving a rather dry and bitter flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The beer is on the thinner and crisper side with a carbonation level that is just above average, with both being rather nice for the drier and bitter flavors of the brew. Overall – A fairly decent APA. The nose deceived me quite a bit however as I was expecting (and kind of hoping for as the nose smelled quite nice) something with a bit more sweetness. It was a little bit unbalanced with its bitter hop and bready taste without much sweet. Even with this said, it was alright and rather easy drinking beer.

Bottle. Bronzed hue, still and shiny, thin head. Slightly musty aroma, with malt as the predominate component. Drinks pretty much middle of the road all the way ... light metallic, malty edge up front, with just a light citric/woody component. (#5569, 7/4/2014)

Pale amber body, thin off-white head, sparse lacing. Malt forward body--showing light biscuit and grain, a touch of floral and citric hops. Medium bodied, light sweetness, moderate carbonation. Simple. Ok.

FROM NOTES: August 27, ’12. From a 12 ounce bottle into a shaker pint. A: Not very complex, pale malts are about all I’m getting from this. A: Pours a nice dark copper color with a decent head that fades slowly to good lacing. T: The flavor is simple with faint sweetness and some dry earthy bitterness. P: Light body, high carbonation. O: Not a bad APA by any means but there’s nothing particularly interesting about it.
