The taste was of sweet rye with mild roasted malts in the back ground. Dry from begining to end. Gave the rest to my dog. Homebrewerguy (284), Oil City, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 29, 2007 I liked it! Unlike many raters who rate a beer according to their particular taste, I try to rate a beer on it’s faithfulness to style. This is a good attempt at a big Scottish Ale. Sweet, not too hoppy, and high in alcohol fits my bill. Luscious hop flavor blended with caramel malts is a winner. I’d like this recipe. bgburdman9 (823), Columbus, Ohio, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 21, 2007 Had on tap at little bar on osu’s campus. Poured a reddish hue. Had a belgian aroma and flavor. I didnt expect this to be a scottish ale when i looked on here. It seemed pretty fruity. Not too bad, very drinkable and didnt notice the 9.3%. 21iceman40 (1731), vienna, West Virginia, USA

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 16, 2006 beautiful red color - very little head. This is quite malty to the taste. Not bad but not the best I had. DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 15, 2006 Bottle from Pat’s. Ruby pour with minimal tan head. Aroma of caramel malt, some vinous cabernet-like fruit, and some slight rauchy aroma. Medium palate, with the fruity and caramel notes and more heat as it warms. Dogbrick (2855), Columbus, Ohio, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 13, 2006 Pours a rich dark amber color with a thin bone white head that was gone almost instantaneously. Spotty lacing. Aroma of caramel and malt. Medium-bodied with equal parts malt and fruit flavor. The alcohol is suprisingly hard to detect in the flavor. The sweet malt is pretty consistent throughout. The finish is smooth and sweet, with a mild burnt malt aftertaste. Could be better, but still a bit above average. cheapdark (2016), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA
| 1.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 1/5 | 5/20 | Dec 13, 2006 The last scotch ale I drank was McEwans and I didn’t care for that one so I am not too excited about this one. I wish Erie would put on the label what kind of beer it was, that would help me choose the ones I like instead of it being a mystery beer. I don’t carry around my computer when I’m in the store so I can’t look up the beer on the spot. This was a 12 oz brown bottle and on the front it said Red Ryder Big Beer, not ale. Pours almost brown but transparent. Taste reveals hoppy and sweet, very unrefined. Seems to be a bit to alky for me. Terribly offensive taste (just like McEwans!) Finish is like drinking bitter cough medicine. Will not buy again because I don’t like Scotch ales. However, if Scotch ales are your thing, you better try it out because it really is a good scotch ale!
