Majormaxim (3), Mt. Joy, Pennsylvania, USA does not count Jan 25, 2008 red, aminimal head, lightly bitter, medium body, lively, Strong finish reminded me alot of Sam Adams Scotch ale. This definetly being more potent. TheCaptain (526), Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 23, 2008 Well, at 10.1% by vol. its a little potent. Nice red color but not clear. Head is small and gone shortly after poor. Slight grape aroma(fruit), tangy with a tinge of that Wee Heavy alcohol flavor. Good Scott ale. Great winter warmer. santos999 (318), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 22, 2008 2006 release (Red Ryder Big Beer). Small 2 year vertical with the 07. This one has a deeper color, better head, and more carbonation. Smells freaking beautiful, almost like a Belgian barleywine. Strong dark fruits and sugars in the nose. Incredibly vinous, with no trace of oxidization. It tastes very light and gentle actually, again (as I noted with the 07) very Doppelbock like. Dark fruits and caramel, some cardboard, some roastiness. Spicy peppers and almost curry as well. Aged well in my opinion, and since they tweaked the recipe for the Ol’ Red (upped the alcohol too), it’s prime for aging now. I kept the score for the 2007 up. 2006 score: Aroma - 9. Appearance - 4. Flavor - 9. Palate - 3. Overall - 17. Total - 4.2. ----
2007 release: Courtesy of foureyedgeek. Pours a kinda boring amber with no head to speak of. Good clarity though. Smells caramel and sweet, slight oxidized (but not in a bad way), with strong woody, almost whiskey aromas. Super sweet, almost cloying. Very hot. Caramel, nutty, toffee, some chocolate. Dark fruits in the finish. Quite strong tasting, borderline overwhelming. To me this tastes like more of a beefed up Doppelbock (i.e. Samiclaus) than a Scotch Ale. Full of fusel alcohols. Leaves almost a liquor like sensation in the chest. Needs a little more time to mellow, but I dig it now. Naka (524), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 14, 2008 12 oz. Thanks Juart. Pours a deep red with a touch of amber. Had a little bit of fizz, but really no head. Strong malt nose with some alcohol, and a lot of sweetness. The alcohol is hidden pretty well. Very sweet taste with a little bit of toffee and alcohol bitterness. There was a bit of a fruity finish. Very little carbonation and adding a little bit could have helped out the body some. notalush (2627), Denver, Colorado, USA Jan 8, 2008 Who brought this beer to Eugene’s? - thank you, whoever you are - red beer, with a frothy head - sticky malt aroma, with caramel and cinnamon - overly sweet, with slight spicy notes - slightly doughy - pretty ambiguous all around, with heavy sweetness - a dry peaty character develops as it warms, but still fails to balance it. Dickinsonbeer (3434), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Jan 6, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours a typical deep amber, low carbonation and a thinning head. Aroma is very sweet with caramel and artificial sweetener, some light oxidation, and some fruitiness. Sharp astringency from the crystal malts- harsh caramel- some burning acridness and a bit of rubbery phenols and plastic in the end. Not as bad as it could have been coming from Erie. JoeMcPhee (4893), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Jan 5, 2008 12 oz bottle. Deep amber beer with a thin white head. Very sweet caramelly malt aroma. A little bit of herbal/spicy hop flavour over a chewy sweet maltiness. Earthy and leathery with a rich sweet, slightly warming finish. Decent brew. argo0 (6842), Washington DC, USA Jan 2, 2008 (12oz bottle) Small beige head atop clear coppery red body. Aroma is moderately sweet, fruity (cherry, strawberry, light watermelon), light caramel. Taste is moderately sweet, cherry/strawberry, caramel, some alcohol warming. Medium-full body, light syrup.
