Wee Heavy Ale: Powerful caramel malt flavor, finishing climatically with a smooth warming sensation. Deep Red. 19.9°

Erie Brewing Company presents the beer previously know as “Red Ryder BIG Beer.” Red Ryder was dubiously awarded two “cease and desist” orders for its name. So with its unique new name (inspired by the long arm of the law), Ol’ Red Cease and Desist brings more to the table than just a big, malty flavor and climaxing warm sensation, it brings a legal record!

Clear and copper in color with minimal head. Aroma is all toffee and caramel. Taste is toffee with alcohol heat coming through on the finish. Not my favorite style but a good beer that I’d drink again.

Bottle. Pours a clear ruby body under a small fizzy beige head that faded to a thin ring. The nose is super malt forward with an interesting fruitiness to it. It’s almost like a sour cherry like note. Some moderate alcohol noticeable as well. The flavor is rather sweet with caramel and toffee sweetness. Some alcohol on the back end, but the sweetness tempers it pretty well. Medium bodied and not as clingy and sticky as I was expecting with soft fizzy carbonation. A little bit of a one-pony show here, but it’s better than I remember it being from when I had it years ago.

Light sweet yeasty smell and very bready taste. Little carbonation and amber in color. Light taste for the ABV. Tasty. Tap.

Like their Scottish, fairly one dimensional sweet caramel and fruity Malts. Perhaps a touch more complexity, a little darker and a little bigger. Still not the greatest.

Draft to snifter at Firehouse grill. Pours a clear deep, reddish copper brown color with a medium sized, creamy beige head. The aroma and flavor have sweet malts, caramel, buttery toffee, fruity but almost candied fruit, hint of earth, predominantly sweet though, hides the abv nicely because of the sweetness.

Draft sample at Firehouse pour dark ruby copper with moderate ecru head. Nose sweet malt, apple, caramel, cherry. Taste cherry cough drop, sweet malt, light caramel/toffee . Overall very sweet, but not horrible.

Bottle. Now marketed as wee heavy ale. Molasses aroma. Some molasses in flavor also along with caramel. Tastier than many beers with such alcohol content

No bottling information.
Glass: St. Bernardus chalice.
Appearance: The body is a lightly hazed reddish with floaties in it. The head is creamy with a light tan hue, it looks beautiful on top of the body.
Aroma: The aroma is malty, I get prominent caramel with cherry and fig up there with it.
Taste: Caramel, cherry and fig are prominent with a bready finish that is reminiscent of chocolate. This drinks lighter than expected with no booziness.
Palate: Medium bodied, mildly carbonated.
Overall: While this isn’t bad, it doesn’t do much for me. It’s a bit flat in flavor and comes off artificial tasting.

Drank from a twelve ounce bottle. I got to go back and get a six pack. Nice malty sweet aromas. A great well balanced heavy ale!

Bottle to shaker glass. Pours murky orange amber, fast white head. No lace or retention. Aroma is somewhat muted, faint caramel maybe. Taste is moderately sweet, not very bitter and a little sour. Medium body, faint carbonation, medicine mouth feel. Tasting notes of sugar, alcohol, black cherry and wild yeast. This beer is a mess in my opinion, it has all the elements of a great beer. If it’s an old bottle, it didn’t age well at 10%.

Transfer from BA review on 8-8-12- Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance – Pours a copper color with the tiniest white head. The head was gone in a flash to give almost no lacing. Smell – The smell is heaviest of caramel and toffee overall giving the brew a sweet smell. Mixed with these aromas is a good presence of booze as well as some lighter notes of malt and smoke. Taste – The taste begins big of a bready and sweet base. The breadiness is of a wheat and biscuit flavor with the sweet being largely of caramel. As the taste advances flavors of toast and cherry come to the tongue. Bits of smoke and toffee also work their way into the taste and when combined with the rest, as well as a big dose of alcohol at the end, leave a boozy sweet flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The beer was thick in body and lower in carbonation. Great for the flavors of the beer as it really allowed for the boozy and sweet flavors to sit and linger on the tongue. Overall – An all right brew, but a bit more boozy then desirable, as it makes it quite difficult to sit, sip and enjoy.
