UPDATED: SEP 20, 2003 Deep brown in colour. Aroma of roasted malts, and slight coffee and chocolate. Flavour is of licorice, coffee, with a nice amount of malt and some sweetness. Finishes with a medium bitterness and very refreshing. Thanks CapFlu.

This is my first schwarzbier so I don't have much to compare it too. Dark brew with a nice head. Roasted coffee taste. Light and very pleasant bitterness at the end. I would drink this again.

2004 version (seal). Deep black but clear with a nice moka coloured head. Smoked malt and bitter chocolate taste , where the roasted notes come out well, and light hop in the finish. Very good body. However, in a blind tasting, this would have been classed as a porter as I tought the malts and hops where more typical of that style.

Bouteille 650ml (Grand Pingouin).

660 ml bottle, thanks to MartinT. Luscious dark brown-black pour with large cumulus head. Malty/yeasty/biscuity nose with hints of roasted coffee. Flavor roasty and "dark", malty but not really sweet, only hints of hops. Very drinkable, nice clean but long finish, but I am still not the world's greatest schwartzbier fan. Good value for an American in Montreal, I'll say that!

Pours dark almost black with a froathy brown head. Not get much of an aroma. Wonderful roast flavor with some coffee and chocolate flavor. Carbonate water mouthfeel. Very slight bitterness on the finish, but mostly roast flavors carry on in the finish also. I really enjoyed this one, Many Thanks Martin T!

Bottle. A rich deep brown to black color with a lush dark brown head. Toasted malts with some licorice and coffee. A medium body with a strong coffee finish and a dry chocolate cake flavor. Thanks to Rastacouere for the trade.

Pours a dark brown color with ruby highlights and a thick, frothy light brown head that leaves decent lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate, fruits and roasted malt. Flavor of chocolate, fruits and roasted malt with a mild bitter finish. Medium body, creamy texture, soft carbonation.
