3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 BeerSkull (675) - SWEDEN - MAY 24, 2012
Sour smell of burned and smoky malt and burnt coffee. Large taste of hard roasted malt, soy sauce, burnt coffee and a little licorice. Slightly burnt and bitter aftertaste. There is a slightly fruity aroma in the flavor that in a positive way lifts in the other heavy flavors of burnt coffee and heavily roasted malt. The fact that the beer has an ABV of 9% is not noticed. A nice Imperial Stout, to belong to the variety of Stout’s with pretty burnt taste (which is not my favorite).
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 slakemythirst (149) - - MAY 20, 2012
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 VsXsV (466) - Linköping, SWEDEN - MAY 13, 2012
Bottle. Opaque, deep black liquid with minimal, thick mocca head. Really small head, had to pour really slow to build it up at all. Aroma is quite roasted with notes of coffee, licorice, dark chocolate, smoke/ash, some yeasty esters, caramel and very light grassy hops. Taste is also roasted with a light sweetness and medium bitterness. Lots of ash and very dark roasted coffee. Too much black patent malt? The mouthfeel is way too light for an imperial stout. Light bodied and quite watery with low carbonation. OK imperial stout but it really lets down on some critical points: Not enough sweetness to balance the roasted notes, too light body and too low carbonation. Nice aroma though.
As it warmed up the roastedness became less aggressive and the body a bit thicker, so I upped the score a bit.
