3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
DATE TASTED: November 15, 2013 ... GLASSWARE: Paulaner pokal... OCCASION: just returned from watching LVR’s production of All My Sons--legs were broken... APPEARANCE: tawny, straw-golden body--comes across rather faded--with effervescence of various pacing; head is snow white and lacing nicely, like frost on a winter window... AROMA: the punch of Saaz front row and center; bananas and some off-putting wet rag as well...PALATE: soft, light-bodied and swift in its descent; active and bubbly on the tongue, inviting flirtation...TASTE: immediate complex esters arrest the teeth--apple and pear, most notably--while subtle malts work the throat with a woody, pulpish effect; floral, almost perfumy experience, a beer that dances lightly on its feet, yet it finishes with some grainy/rice aftertaste ...OVERALL: as one of the four self-touted "Great Beers of Belgium,," this pilsner has some product potential--over two hundred fifty years of brewing, black and gold foil necktie, a nicely drinkable flow--and delivers with a delicately complex pilsner worthy of a second look...

Not a good beer. All around not good. Would mostly like anything else but this. Not much else to say.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Barley and malt in the nose. Pour is yellow with a thick white head that laces up the glass nicely. Flavor is light and dry, with only a deep hint of hoppy aftertaste. But the maltyness shines through. Some grains, grass, and spice, but not overpowering. A bit bland for a Belgian, but I wish the standard American beer was at least half this good. Lower carbonation means less "burn" in the throat and more intensity on the palate. A flavorful sipper as well as a qualified chugger. It goes as well with food as it does as a lawn mowing beer. Very balanced, and very good.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
it simply is an impressive brew. the aroma and taste of farm fresh malted barley layered with some white an black pepper that floats thru your palate. a sense of caramel with dryness competing and not winning out to the finish. a layered palate that is superior. the beer is satisfying, yet still you will want another. a gentleman’s brew for when you want to be. does not seem yeasty but there you have it! a really sun drenched golden taste to it.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Very similar to Pilsner Urquell with the Saaz hop forward aroma and taste. Nice crisp clean flavor and sessionable...a very utilitarian brew.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
A very good Pilsener. For it’s style this has a strong malty backbone. It’s quite smooth and easy to drink. Much better than many of it’s heavily marketed peers.

FROM NOTES: October 21, ’13.
A: Mostly grain notes with some floral notes and a hint of sulfur.
A: Pours a clean yellow color with a white head.
T: Like the nose this has a very smooth grainy taste initially with faint apple and white grape flavors. Has a bit of a funk to it but finishes with a spicy and sweet mix.
P: Light bodied and extremely crisp on the palate. Tingly and bubbly.
O: A decent pils AT BEST.
