Our commemorative ale honors Samson the elk. This is an oatmeal stout that is full-bodied with a wonderful roasted flavor and just a touch of sweetness. We use galena and goldings hops. Alc / vol 5 %

This stout poured a deep black colour without a head at all. Random soapy bubbles, tan in colour. No lacing. Scents include cocoa, light coffee, white paste (glue), cardboard and burnt toast. First sip was almost un-carbonated with flavours of roasted coffee and malt with a very light flavour of cocoa. Finish is roasty with roasted caramel flavours lingering with coffee.

A weak vanilla aroma. Black with a thin tan and minimal lacing. Dark roasted malts and vanilla with a slightly sour finish. Palate is a little creamy and moderately heavy.

UPDATED: NOV 25, 2014 Look: pours a dark black. Brown sugar color head. Smell: chocolate powder. A bitter coffee. Roasted malt. Black Licorice. Taste: chocolate bar. Bitter coffee. Malt heavy. Slight bitterness on the back. Feel: a little dry. Thin mouth feel for a stout. Overall: not a bad beer really. Nice balance in the malts and other flavors. All around good beer. Pours dark black with tan head. Aroma is slight roasted malts, not getting much. Fairly light body. Roasty dark malts with a little bit of oatmeal and some sugary sweetness. Not bad but pretty average.

Bottle. Creamy chocolate roasty aroma. Same with the taste, with a slightly metallic finish. Smooth body. Pretty tasty.

12oz bottle, purchased from Brennan’s in Madison Wisconsin during my stay for GTMW. Impressively black color. Thin ring of bubbly light brown head. Leaves decent ropes of lace. Medium-plus body. Good chewy thickness to the texture. Smooth, kind of crisp, light carbonation. Light dry finish. Good roast aroma, some coffee, light bit of dark chocolate, and just a hint of dark fruit. Moderate bitter taste, light to moderate sweet. Great, full, flavorful and satisfyingly bitter and roasty oatmeal stout. Much better than expected. Great to enjoy with my sandwich.

Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance was a nice dark brown close to black color with a one finger white to off white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute leaving some clingy semi - thick lacing trying to stick to the glass. The smell was basically roasty with a tad of light chocolate and coffee. The taste followed the nose. The palate was slightly roasty and carried itself impressionable over my tongue in a good way making it semi - sessionable. Overall I say that this was a pretty good beer.

Nice earthy aroma. Pours dark chocolatey. With very little head. Taste the roasted malts with a typical stout finish. Great flavor.
