This has got to be one of my favourite bland lagers of the current time. I’ve had the stronger stuff in Spain but this is what they sell over here at my local tesco, with a 3 for 2 offer, so 12 bottles for a tenner, not bad value compared to the other of wishy washy UK lager like Stella, Bud, Carling, Fosters Gold etc which retail at £8 for 12. Granted I haven’t had it in anything other than a bottle, but it’s crisp, with a pleasing lagery taste. It holds well in high quantity, which is very important for me as I tend to drink at least 8-12 bottles in a session. The alcohol content is also pleasing for this purpose, at 4.6 it doesn’t get me as drunk as 5% stuff would, but lasts the same amount of time. It smells like a lazy Spanish afternoon, and would go great with tapas. The colour I assume is pale golden, as the Spanish stuff is. It also has an added benefit in that I’ve had no ill effects the following morning, as I do so often with the now 4.8% major brand lagers that we have in this country, which have also become very metallic. I assume this is because of a lack of chemical filtering. It has corn, and citrus in the nose, very grainy taste, with a mild hint of citrus. Light beer for light summer days. Lovely.

Inoffensive, drabe.

Bottle from Tesco into a pint glass. Pale yellow, gassy, bubbly head. Reasonably hopped aroma with some malt. Malty, bitter, not too bad. Not going to set the world alight by any means. Drinkable but very plain. Inoffensive.

Bottle. Pale gold with lots of bubbles and a white scum. Nose is corny sweetness with a tiny bit of lemon hop. Taste is sugary sweet with a touch of that corn syrupy taste and lemon hop. Finish is icky and sticky. Bleh.

66 cl bottle. Pale yellow color, clear, with big white head. Stingy nose. Aroma is malty, grainy, biscuits, with straw and hay. Some hoppy notes, a bit metallic bitterness, rice/starch. Nicely bodied for a 4.6, average carbonation, good enough.

Typical eurobeer. Nothing special but to have one during watching footy. Visually ok, aroma is quite sweet and somehow metallic. Tastes sweet, I recognised plum and raisin. In conclusion, regular euro beer, as it is meant to be.

330 ml bottle bought at Market Place by Jason’s in Mei Foo.

Piss pale golden yellow colour; Less than one-quarter finger head and residual soapy white foam which fades in 10 seconds; Very small lacing with fizzy carbonation; Pungent smell of light malt, with strong rice, grains, hint of corn syrup, stale apple, faint wet cardboard, thin lemon and smelly grass; Light sweet taste of malt, with rice, grains, soggy bread, lemon, mid to light bitter hops and strawy grass; Light body, watery palate; Mouth feel is thinned-out adjuncted Asian macro Pale lager: okay maltyness, minimal sweetness, lots of rice and grains, soggy bread palate; Hoppiness is light lemon and smelly grass in nose, strong strawy grass in taste. Obvious bitter hops for the style for abrupt moderately light bitter finish; Wet after taste. Easy to mouth.

Comments: I just don’t understand why an established European brewery has to make their Pils smells and tastes like an Asian macro Pale - ricey, grainy, thin with stinky hops, while I can get them cheaply with real local macros if I want it. This is premium-priced garbage. Drain pours!

Estrella is a very popular beer in Catalonia, its taste is smooth, a bit bitter and pretty sparkling, good enought to be for the masses beer. Served in almost any bar in Barcelona (85% marketshare as per 2006)

Can 50 cl.
Pale yellow with medium head. Weak nose of grass and some light malt. Taste is much the same. A half decent pilsener.

Bottle. Had this yonks ago, can't believe I hadn't rated it yet. Probably because its a middle-of-the-road lager. A tad sweet, but fresh enough. Grainy and medium-bodied, goes well with oily Spanish tapas.
