Bottle at Ølfestival 2013. Clear golden coloured with a small white head. Malty aroma of hay with skunky notes. Malty flavour of hay with notes of hops. Hoppy finish.

otakuden (1783) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - MAY 29, 2013
Appearance: Clear straw under a fizzy white head which rapidly fades into a thin broken film.
Nose: Faint; I’ll have to dig deep for this one. A whisper of sweet grains and sweet breads. Soggy days old cut lemons.
Palate: Sweet bread dominates. Dank around the edges. Lemon soaked white bread – soggy. Salty in the back.
Final Thoughts: Gluten free beers rarely taste good when they are brewed to come as close to resembling a real beer as possible. A lot like Non-Alcoholic beer, they just shouldn’t be. Now, that’s not to deny those who are Gluten-Intolerant a tasteful fermented quaff, and for that I direct you to cider, mead, and Dogfish Head’s Tweason’Ale which is so good, even those who are not gluten intolerant would like it.

Small white head and clear golden colour. Very fizzy, strong carbonation. Nose is malty (and it’s gluten free!), but also some citrus. Taste is also malty, a bit sweet. Light bodied. Nothing special, I bought it for a mistake, but to be sincere it’s not that bad, acceptable beer, better than many mexican for example.

Bottle. Sweet grainy malt and grassy aroma. lightly hazed honey gold with a small off-white head. Sweet malt with a bitter grassy finish. Light body, moderate carbonation. One of the better gluten free beers I’ve tried so far.

Beer5000 (5900) - Kristiansand, NORWAY - MAY 18, 2013
330 ml bottle. Clear, pale golden body with a small white head. Weak aroma of grain with a hint of grass. Flavor is light grainy, soft malt, some fruit and low bitterness. Medium body, short aftertaste and a rather crisp and clean flavor. Not bar, just boring.

ghawener (1567) - San Salvador, EL SALVADOR - MAY 16, 2013
Bottle: Pours bright yellow with a heavy white head. Almost no aroma. Taste starts strong, bitter a bit of skunk, then quickly mellows and a malty / bready flavor appears. Finish is light, refreshing. Overal better than most mega brews, a decent alternative for celiacs. Food Pairing: anything gluten free!

EtTuCthulhu (1391) - Columbia, Missouri, USA - MAY 14, 2013
This beer’s aroma is mostly skunky with hints of sweet dough yeast, and the color is a clear pale yellow with no head. The taste is mildly sour and mildly sweet, and the palate combines a medium body, thin texture, soft carbonation, and an abrupt finish.

GoufCustom (1614) - HONG KONG - MAY 12, 2013

330 ml bottle bought at CitySuper in Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui.

Clear golden yellow colour; Very thin head and residual white foam which fades in 30 seconds; Minimal lacing and notable carbonation; Strong smell of malt, rice, light wet cardboard and light grass; Mid to light sweet taste of malt, with pretty strong rice, light apple juice, sugar, light bread, lime / citrus and grassy hops; Mid to light body, thin and crisp palate; Taste profile is sweet malty macro with strong rice character and some acetaldehyde (apple juice), otherwise pretty clean and no other fouls throughout; Hoppiness is grassy nose, moderate citrusy taste, and strong and lasting grassy hop bitterness for finish; Pretty dry after taste, very easy and sweet to mouth.

Comments: As a gluten-free beer, this one is quite decent, richer than most macro pale lager in terms of aroma, richness, and taste. The slight cardboard smell and acetaldehyde taste are minor issues, and this could have been on par with Echigo’s Koshihikari. Yet, its rice inclusion is more like macro adjunct than taste-booster of the latter, and while it’s suitable for gluten-intolerance drinker, it may be too sweet / high unfermented sugar content for someone with diabetes. While it can’t cover all the grounds, it has room for improvement to be better. My fingers are crossed.

Douberd (4824) - Arnhem, NETHERLANDS - MAY 4, 2013
330 ml bottle at home, poured into a shaker glass. ABV 5,4% Pale golden yellow colour on the body, with minimal activity in it. One finger of snow white soapy head, with low retention and very light lacing left on the glass. Not much of an aroma, just some faint sweet malts. Tastes good and in comparison with the other gluten free beer I had, this ones tastes great. But only in comparison, by itself it doesn’t stand out of any other pale lager out there. At least men with gluten allergy can drink a decent beer. Sweet, some malts and very discreet apple. Light on the body, average carbonation. Very good beer if we are talking about gluten free beers.
