Commercial Description:
This beer is the jewel in the crown of Damm’s century-long beer-brewing experience. Since 1876, when Alsatian August Kuentzmann Damm founded the company bearing his name, numerous generations of master brewers have perfected this lager until it has become a landmark in the world of beers. This lager beer with a universally appreciated character and taste is ideal for drinking at any time. Its high quality is due to the finest selection of raw materials and the meticulous brewing process. It stands out for its creamy hops-flavoured froth and refreshing taste.

I am always skeptical of any Spaniard beer. Or Italian beer or French beer for that matter. These are wine countries and they have no business dabbling the the art of beer. This Estrella brew was, however, surprisingly above average. It looked great pouring out and despite a slight metallic taste (which disappeared after a sip or two), had a surprisingly neutral flavor. I don’t even know, really, why these Iberians (despite the fact that the brewery was founded by an Alsatian - so basically German) even bother brewing their own beers. Leave all European brewing to East of the Rhine. Not a bad beer by any standards, but since it is an import here in the states, it’s just not worth the high price for such a midland beer.

Light lager nose, pale gold color, fluffy sticky head. Light grainy malt taste with a more sweet honey-like character. Low bitter - can’t really pick out the hops. Thin and weak.

330 ml bottle, 4.6% ABV export version. Courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Also available in Norwegian grocery stores. I guess the 4.6% version should have a listing of its own, but they’re both just called "Estrella Damm", so - never mind. Pale golden colour, decent head. Moderate citrussy aroma. The flavour is slightly citrussy and quite refreshing, without any offensive sidenotes. Very moderate hops in the finish. A light refreshment for a day in the Spanish sun - no more, no less.

I really enjoyed this. Not the beer itself, really, but I certainly enjoyed saying things like "I’m pouring this Damm Beer" or "This Damm beer is pretty damn average" or "I guess I’ve rated a Damm Spanish beer now" or - Well, you get the Idea.

Bottle, bought in Hengelo. Grainy aroma and flavor. Hints of licorice and cinnamon. Thin and bland. Not good, but could be worse.
