COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A dark beer, light and sweet and full bodied, highly fermented, very malty aroma. The slight Hpfennote rounds out the flavor and gives this drink a monastery special character. A beer in the good old custom of the monastery.

Unfortunately I’m still getting over a small cold, so I’m not sure I can properly comment. I only got one bottle from my local shop, just to try it on a whim (having not looked it up before I bought it,) and found it to be enjoyable--so I’ll certainly buy it again and give it a better review. In brief: Nice, dark, nearly opaque brownish-black appearance. Had to pour kind of hard the last half of the bottle to get a good head on it, which didn’t last long and didn’t lace, but what was there was a nice tan color. As for aroma and taste, I can’t guarantee my senses aren’t a little off, but I detected a slight sour smell, and something woody. Odd, maybe a chocolate plumb. Not at all unpleasant, and the slight sour note did not last long nor was too prominent. Not too hoppy, either. I prefer a rich, roasted hop in a beer as dark as this, but that’s not the fault of the beer that it didn’t have it, just my expectations. It had a good mouthfeel. A little light, but no oily film feeling or back of the palate linger I usually seem to have when there’s a slight sourness. No, this was a fine beer, and I could tell there’s a slightly richer complexity to it that I just was not in the best state to appreciate.

500 ml bottle into pilsener glass, no bottle dating. Pours crystal clear reddish brown color with a small 1 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Minimal spotty lacing on the glass, with a fair amount of carbonation streaming up. Aromas of caramel, toast, toffee, nuttiness, biscuit, molasses, raisin, prune, light chocolate, and light earthy spiciness. Very nice aromas with good strength and balance. Taste of caramel, toffee, toast, biscuit, nuttiness, molasses, raisin, light chocolate, and light herbal spiciness. Lingering notes of caramel, toffee, nuttiness, toast, light chocolate, and biscuit on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robust flavors with great balance and very clean; no cloying sweetness at all. Medium carbonation and body; with a slightly creamy and very crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with pretty much no warming noticed at all on the finish. Overall this is an excellent Dunkel lager. Very nice balance and complexity of flavor; and extremely smooth and easy to drink. Very well done.

Test vom 31.10.2010 Noten: 12,12,11,11,12,12 - 11,70

It’s red mahogany with a creamy head. The aroma has notes of caramel, burnt sugar, nuts and milk chocolate. The flavor is moderately sweet with notes of burnt sugar, caramel, light chocolate, nuts, toast and the finish is slightly dry. A very nice dunkel.

Bottle at Rathskeller in Indy. The beer is a dark ruby-brown color with a medium light beige head that diminishes slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of caramel, roasted malt and fruit. Light-bodied with a toasty malt character and notes of caramel and sweet fruit. The finish is malty with a sweet roast aftertaste. Decent overall.

500ml bottle in a lager glass. Pours transparent brown with a light tan head. Aroma of caramel malts with a little nuttiness plus floral hops. Flavor about the same. Average texture. A decent beer.
