A dark beer, light and sweet and full bodied, highly fermented, very malty aroma. The slight Hpfennote rounds out the flavor and gives this drink a monastery special character. A beer in the good old custom of the monastery.

Bottle @ Ambrosetti, Berlin. Pours ruby copper with a small creamy head. Bread, caramel and grain. Good bitterness. Some fruit. Smooth and dry. Quite good!

500ml Bottle, just out of date when poured into my ’Judas’ stemmed massive tulip glass on 4 Apr 2013. Looked really great: a reddy, mahogany brown body with a very large head of foam on top. Malty notes hit your nose: sweet molasses, caramel and toffee hints come through more and more as the beer warmed in the glass. Those same sweet malty aromas are also within the taste, this is a sweet brew:most likely the sweetest beer in this style I’ve had so far. Body suits the alcohol content and overall a pleasant and easy drinking beer.

Dark amber brown with a red tint and a frothy, tan, lacy, disappearing head. Smells of toasted malt and caramel with nice chocolate notes , roast, with a nutty biscuit. Caramel malt all the way, light spicy hops with hints of fruit – plums, raisins. Light thin body with soft carbonation. Tastes of sweet caramel, nut, biscuit, toasted malt, roast and coco and soft plum with soft grassy bitterness on the dry finish. Nice balance between sweetness and roast. Very easy to drink.

This is a nice dunkel. Weak body, but with a pleasant roasted character in this dominantly malty outing from Ettaler. Chocolate and dark rye bread.

#156 Die Klosterbrauerei Ettal scheint mir ein ganz entspannter Ort zu sein, wenn man von deren Produkte auf die Lebensweise schließen darf!?? Ein wiederum sehr ausgewogenes Bier zwischen würzig-malzigen Röstaromen und feinherben Hopfen. Der Abgang ist einem Stout nicht unähnlich und auch hier ist das Bier trotz der verschiedensten Malztöne nicht klebrig süß. Ein absolut <sophisticated> Dunkel. Bitte mehr, werte Klosterbrüder!! From the 500 ml. bottle. The pour is a handsome looking dark mahogany brown to amber with a big blast of foamy, lacing head. The aroma is subtle all in all with a caramel malt note and sugar sweetness. The body is medium. The taste starts out with a sweet toffee-caramel flavor and then ends slightly on the bitter side. Easy to drink.

Biggish beige head. Clear deep brown body. Earthy caramelly aroma with chocolatey notes. Dry-sweet roasty earthy raisiny taste with honey notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dryish earthy peppery honey aftertaste with bready caramelly notes. Really nice. Drinkable and full of character; more generous than most dunkels. (0.5l bottle, Absinth Depot Berlin.)

.5L vom fass (on tap) at Kloster Gasthof across the street from the monastery. Clear deep orange-brown with a very creamy tan head. The wonderful head contributes to the creation of a superb mouthfeel of this very smooth, medium-bodied beer. Fine textured carbonation rises continuously and re-establishes some head and re-coats the lacing on the glass with every sip. The very appealing medium malt aroma is simple and clean, if a bit more subdued than i would prefer. Nonetheless, there is no shortage of rich malt flavor, and the sweetness is kept in balance by some otherwise subtle hopping. O: Excellent dunkel and, unfortunately, much better than the version I have had as a bottled import in the US.

ROGUE (2182) - Lewes, Delaware, USA - OCT 10, 2012
500ml bottle. Poured a clear brownish bronze color with a small light tan head. Smell is all dark malts, with molasses and caramel. The flavor was matly with a spicy and lightly metallic bittering. Caramel malt and chocolate with a nutty and light biscuit flavor leads with a decent level of bitterness keeping things in check. The finish was dry and body was medium with a moderate carbonation.
